Changing Of The Guard At The NFL Today on CBS

All good things must come to an end and today CBS announced major changes to its pregame show. It is a changing of the guard at The NFL Today on CBS. Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason will not be returning to the studio show. Newly retired quarterback Matt Ryan will be joining the team with James Brown, Nate Burleson, Bill Cowher, and JJ Watt. Per CBSSports.com Ryan had this to say about joining the show:

“I grew up watching ‘The NFL Today’ so I’m honored to join this iconic show. And hope to continue the high standard set by Phil, Boomer and others before me,” said Ryan. “I am thankful for this exciting new opportunity and can’t wait to get started with my new teammates.”

The NFL Today started in 1975 and was the first live show that highlighted every game in the NFL. Before the internet and social media, there were pregame shows like this. It was a way for fans to get additional information about the Sunday games. However, there are so many ways to access information about NFL games now. Therefore, it seems a change was in order to try to keep the show competitive.

James Brown’s contract was not expiring and J.J. Watt appeared on a part-time basis in 2023. Cowher and Burleson are staying. Which leaves Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason out in the cold after more than two decades as NFL analysts. Esiason made his own announcement on his WFAN morning show indicating the change was, “More their decision than maybe mine.” However, his WFAN show will remain on CBS Sports Network.

As for Phil Simms, he said, “Great 26 yrs run with CBS SPORTS. Even though that part of my career is over I look forward to what is next..”

Both Simms and Esiason were successful NFL quarterbacks, having played 15 and 14 years respectively. And they successfully transitioned to broadcasting careers. But I will be sad to see Simms and Esiason gone from The NFL Today. They had a good run and were entertaining and informative. Esiason will continue with his morning show and hopefully Simms will find a new home to continue sharing his insights.

Over the lifetime of the show there have been many hosts, guests and changes. This is one more of them. But with new guys like Watt and Ryan on set they have the opportunity to make the show their own. Chemistry matters so we’ll see if the changes pay off.
