Boston Celtics Top Assistant Charles Lee Hired to Lead Charlotte Hornets
New day, new face. The Charlotte Hornets have hired the Boston Celtics’ Charles Lee, one of the most accomplished assistant coaches around, to lead their young team. The Hornets feel that Lee will give the franchise a new fresh approach. And help whip things and their team culture more into one with a championship aura.
Adrian Wojnarowski reports that it’s a 4 year deal. Lee has been with the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics for the last 11 seasons. He’s also got championship pedigree as he was on the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks staff under Mike Budenholzer; therefore, he’s well qualified for this new challenge and undertaking.
Furthermore, James Plowright highlights that in the last 10 seasons the teams with Lee on their coaching staff have a 508-289 record (64% winning percentage). Plus, they have finished top 10 in both offense and defense for 5/10 seasons. Thus, finishing with the best net rating 3 times.
The Hornets are an exciting young team with lots of talent, but they have struggled to win games. Their record was 21-61 last season but with the return of all star LaMelo Ball and number 2 overall pick Brandon Miller, Lee will have some enviable talent to mold into a winner.

Who’s going to be on Lee’s staff? We don’t know for sure yet but Evan Sidery says that former Los Angeles Lakers Coach Darvin Ham is a “name to be monitored” to be lead assistant coach on Lee’s staff. They worked together as assistants with the Atlanta Hawks under Mike Budenholzer from 2014-2022.

Moreover, Boston Celtics Coach Joe Mazzulla when asked by John Karalis what he had to say about Charles Lee, he had this to say:
“Happy for him, great coach, long overdue and he’s going to do a great job”
When John inquired further on what “advice” he had for Lee, Mazzulla added.
“Everybody hates you, get used to it. You’re no longer the nice shiny toy.”
Lee will stay with the Celtics through their current playoff run before reuniting with the Hornets EVP of basketball operations, Jeff Peterson in Charlotte. They worked together previously with the Atlanta Hawks (2014-2018).
