Angel City FC Becomes World’s Highest Valued Women’s Sports Team Thanks to Disney CEO Bob Iger

Angel City FC Becomes World’s Highest Valued Women’s Sports Team Thanks to Disney CEO Bob Iger

Iger has been the CEO of Disney since 2005. After succeeding Michael Eisner and carrying on the torch until his contract expired in 2020. However, since 2022 he has gone back to serving at the helm. Yet, his passion in business extends further than just an iconic mouse and some avenging comic book superheroes. The businessman is now entering into the realm of women sports ownership; specifically soccer. And that is how Angel City FC has become the world’s highest valued women’s sport team; thanks to Bob Iger and his wife.

Bob and his wife, Willow Bay, are excited to help take Angel FC into a new era. The first step was getting a deal done. And they succeeded.

Sports ownership which used to be viewed as just a “hobby” of the rich. Has definitely evolved into a real financial investment and monetary machine. And Iger definitely has the funds to buy into the game. According to Forbes:

“Iger is indeed super rich: Forbes estimates his net worth at $690 million. That’s likely more than Abigail Disney. Based on a review of Forbes’ historical files, and assumptions that she and her three siblings each inherited an even share of their father Roy E. Disney’s fortune, Abigail is likely worth less than $500 million.”

With many estimating that Iger is most likely now above $700 million; it is no wonder why he is ready to strike with a hot iron. Women’s sports from merch to tickets sales are skyrocketing; with projections only heading upwards. So then, the time to buy in is definitely now.

Furthermore, with this acquisition of Angel City the couple has also set a new record. Bob and Willow have officially agreed to acquire Angel City FC at a valuation of $250 million. This specific deal makes this NWSL club the most valuable women’s sports franchise in the world. The $250 million valuation is more than double the NWSL record.

Moreover, Bob Iger and his wife Willow are not the only ones going into women’s sports ownership. Angel Reese is one of the founding members of Washington D.C.‘s NWSL team. Former WNBA player Sue Bird has also bought into WNBA (Seattle Storm) and NWSL team ownership.

And then there’s former NFL quarterback, Eli Manning. His daughters convinced him to become a part owner of NWSL team, Gotham FC. A franchise that on November 11, 2023, won their first NWSL Championship over the OL Reign. Thus, proving to be a very solid investment for Eli.

So then, plenty of sports stars as well as executives are seeing the value of women’s sports and opening their pockets. We are sure this trend of purchasing women’s sports franchises will continue to be a common occurrence. The only question is, who is next?
