It would have been great to see this highly anticipated pairing in action. However, it is not to be. Alex Eala and Venus Williams are no longer teaming up for the Mubadala DC Open.

Alex Eala has officially withdrawn from the doubles competition at the Mubadala DC Open. Thus, ending her highly anticipated partnership with tennis legend Venus Williams.

Tournament organizers had earlier announced that Eala and Williams would reunite after reaching the Bad Homburg quarterfinals together last month. However, the official doubles draw no longer includes Eala, while Williams is now paired with Diana Shnaider. At the time the news initially broke regarding Eala’s decision; no official reason had been announced for the change.

However, just a few short hours later this would soon change. Both Eala and Williams would provide statements to the press. For instance, Sunday morning while speaking to the media at the DC Open, Alex Eala revealed why she isn’t playing doubles with Venus in D.C. She says,

“I have so much respect for Venus. I am so grateful for every opportunity that I have to be around her, to learn from her, to hit with her. But I do think this is my first week coming back, and I think that Venus is someone who deserves a partner who can give their all physically, emotionally, mentally when they’re on court with her.

I think right now I think I can only do that for singles. I don’t have the capacity yet to be able to give that in both singles and doubles. I’m really grateful for the opportunity that I had, or have, and hopefully we see more of it in the future.”

Later on in the day the legendary Venus Williams also had a moment with the media. Venus too was asked by the press why she and Alex Eala are no longer playing doubles in D.C.; Williams also was questioned whether playing with Eala is out of the question in the future.

Venus briefly just stated, “We had a great time playing at Bad Homburg so we were looking forward to playing again. Didn’t work out this time. Would love for there to be future times. We’ll see what happens.”
