Yankees Announce They Will Retire CC Sabathia’s No. 52 on September 26th

Sabathia carved out a legacy as one of the most durable and effective left-handed starters the game has ever seen. After signing a seven-year deal with the Yankees ($161 million). CC quickly proved to be the ace New York was looking for, going 19-8 with a 3.37 ERA. Sabathia started Game 1 of each of the Yankees’ three postseason series, winning ALCS Most Valuable Player honors and leading New York to the World Series title. No wonder this storied franchise wants to honor this legend of the game. On Wednesday, the Yankees announced that they will retire CC Sabathia’s No. 52 on September 26th.

Sabathia’s No. 52 is the 23rd number retired by the Yankees, as No. 8 was retired for catchers Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra on July 22, 1972. But technically, you can look at Sabathia as being the 24th Yankees player or manager to have his number retired. He’s the first since Paul O’Neill (No. 21) on Aug. 21, 2022.

CC Sabathia is very moved by New York’s decision to retire his number. Speaking of this honor he stated online,

“From the first number that hung in my locker to 52 forever hanging in Monument Park – this HOF journey has come full circle. To have my number retired by the New York Yankees this year is one of the greatest honors of my life. The LegaCCy continues.”

Don’t you just love how he wrote “Legacy?” Very nice touch CC. Nevertheless, the baseball world will never stop thinking of Sabathia, as being one of the fiercest workhorses of his generation.

Sabathia was a six-time All-Star and an American League Cy Young Award winner. He hurled 3,577 1/3 innings across 561 Major League contests, surpassing the 200-inning threshold eight times. He’s one of just 15 pitchers in history to notch at least 250 wins and 3,000 strikeouts, and only the third left-hander to accomplish the feat, along with Hall of Famers Steve Carlton and Randy Johnson.

CC Sabathia was was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2025, receiving the honor in his first year of eligibility. Following his induction, the Yankees honored him with a $250,000 donation to his PitCCh In Foundation. And now the organization will honor him once more. The Yankees will retire the Hall of Famer’s No. 52 and honor him with a plaque in Monument Park on Sept. 26.
