Wrapping Up Week 2 Preseason Sunday Action And Other NFL News
There were two games on Sunday following the loaded Saturday schedule of preseason games. So I’ll start by wrapping up the week 2 preseason Sunday action and then get to some other NFL related news. The two games were Green Bay vs. Denver and New Orleans vs. San Francisco. What stood out about the Green Bay and Denver game was the score, 2 – 27. When was the last time a team scored 2 points? There have been plenty of times when a team only scored 2 points. But the last time was Sep. 8, 2013 when the Jacksonville Jaguars played the Kansas City Chiefs, final score 2 – 28. In any case, Green Bay’s backup quarterbacks started against Denver’s starters and were shut out. That may be a concern for the Packers if anything happens to Jordan Love.
However, that may not be an issue for the San Francisco 49ers as Joshua Dobbs showed out on Sunday. He led San Francisco to three consecutive scoring drives in the second quarter. Dobbs was able to scramble making defenders miss while having good accuracy from the pocket. If he can keep it up then the backup QB position just may be his. And starter Brock Purdy is okay with that:
“He’s [Dobbs] a baller, man,” Purdy said of Dobbs, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “He makes plays, goes through his reads and brings energy, man. He’s out there making plays and guys feed off it. That’s football. It’s not always going to be pretty, you drop back and everything is going to be perfect. You’re going to have to make plays off-schedule and bring some juice to the team, and guys feed off that. So, love having him in the room, and like I said, he’s pretty electric.”
Wrapping Up Week 2 Preseason Sunday Action And Other NFL News
In other NFL news, free agent Stephon Gilmore has signed with the Minnesota Vikings. Gilmore and the Vikings have agreed to a one-year contract worth up to $10 million with $7 million guaranteed, his agent, Jason Chayut of Sportstars Inc., told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Gilmore will be reunited with Vikings’s defensive coordinator Brian Flores. The two worked together when they were both with the New England Patriots. Flores was the Patriots’ defensive play caller in 2018 when Gilmore received his first All-Pro nod.
Also, after 12 seasons in the NFL, quarterback Colt McCoy is calling it a career. McCoy told NFL Network’s Peter Schrager on Monday that he is retiring from the game and transitioning to the broadcast booth, where he’ll join NBC Sports for its expanded Big Ten football coverage this season.
So it’s never a dull moment in the NFL.
