Wrap Up For Week 2 of the NFL
With the Sunday and Monday night games concluded we can close the book on week 2. But before we do that here is a wrap up for week 2 of the NFL. Monday night featured a double header on ESPN and ABC. But let’s revisit the Sunday night match-up between the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins. Once again the Patriots got themselves into a hole with a 10-0 start. They didn’t do much with the first possession of the game and had to punt. The Dolphins then marched down the field. But, the Patriot’s defense stiffened up in the red zone and held the
Dolphins to a field goal. On their next possession, the Patriot’s rookie “Pop” Douglas had a good gain only to have the ball punched out of his arm. The Dolphins pounced on the ball and ran it back for a touchdown.
That is pretty much the story of the Patriots. They can move the ball and then they make bonehead mistakes. Or else they can’t seem to move the ball very much whether they try to run or pass. Special teams contributed with a beautiful blocked field goal. The rush by Schooler was timed perfectly. More teams will likely be imitating that play as the season goes on. However, it was all for naught. The Patriots offense moved the ball down to the Miami 22 and Mac Jones was intercepted. They really need to get their offensive act together. One of Miami’s scores was due to a turnover. Therefore, the 24-17 score could have been in favor of the Patriots if the offense had played better.
Moving on to Monday night we started with the Saints vs Panthers. It was a punt-filled first half including an interception thrown by Derek Carr and a fumble by Bryce Young. Neither QB did much to begin with but the Saints scored two field goals and the Panthers scored one. Carr is the sixth starting quarterback for the Saints since Drew Brees retired. However, Carr says he’s happy and comfortable with the offensive system. As for the Panthers, Bryce Young is a rookie and the Saints defense gave him no quarter. But he did show a spark when he scrambled for 22 yards in the fourth quarter leading to their only touchdown of the game. I’m by no means writing off the rookie; the NFL is a tough place to play and it takes time for a player to develop.
Wrap Up For Week 2 of the NFL
We ended the week with the Browns vs Steelers. The division rivalry is always a brawl and this one was no different. The Browns had a terrible start with a Deshaun Watson interception on the first play of the game. Pittsburgh’s Highsmith took the interception for a 30 yard touchdown. Watson had some good throws that were on point and others that were off the mark. The same could be said for Steelers QB Kenny Pickett. The Browns defense was consistently in his face and disrupted his play. But It was an experience that the second year player can learn from. Overall the game was filled with mistakes by both teams. However, I did expect better play from Deshaun Watson and he will have to do better going forward to give the Browns a chance to win.
In very sad news, Nick Chubb had to leave the game with a horrible knee injury. According to head coach Kevin Stefanski Chubb is out for the season and will need surgery. Thankfully the broadcast did not show the video of his injury but many people are saying it was pretty bad. I get a little squeamish seeing guys go down with injuries so I
will take everyone’s word for it. Thoughts and prayers go out to Chubb and other players who have been injured and wishing them all speedy recoveries.
Up next is week 3, see you on Thursday!
