WNBA Told Players The Sides Need to Agree to Labor Deal by March 10 to Avoid Season Delay

There has been a lot going was of late as negotiations continue between the league as well as the players. However, time is quickly running out. We are in the 11th of this situation. In fact, The WNBA told players that the sides would need to agree to a labor deal by March 10 or the season would be delayed.

The reason why discussion really needs to pick up, is because there is a LOT to do before this year’s season commences on May 8. For instance, the league has to conduct an expansion draft for two new franchises; the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo. Additionally, the WNBA draft is scheduled for April 13, and training camp will likely begin on April 19. Therefore, this gives the WNBA about a two-month window to conduct all of its offseason business.

Furthermore, NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, during NBA All-Star weekend mentioned that final decisions and an overall resolution needed to come to fruition in order for the women’s league to avoid losing momentum. Silver told the press,

“What I’d love to accomplish is sort of putting pressure on everybody. And say, okay, you know, I’ve been through so many cycles of collective bargaining; and often things tend to get done at the 11th hour,” Silver said. “We’re getting awfully close to the 11th hour now when it comes to bargaining.

“We need to now move towards the next-level sense of urgency. And not lose momentum in terms of the amazing amount of progress we’ve seen in women’s basketball.”

While the players have tried to make some concessions to get a deal done. The league has been mainly unmoved in its stance; other than agreeing to housing (apartments/studios, etc.); due to the players receiving rather small salaries and wages.

This week a bargaining session did occur in attempt to resolve things before the March deadline. Annie Costabile of FOS reports, “Can confirm that the WNBA and WNBPA had a virtual bargaining session that. [Which] included over 50 players as well as union & league staff including members of the LRC. Additionally, the league informed the union that a new term sheet should be completed by March 10 to avoid any delays to the season. A source with knowledge confirmed. That is two weeks from tomorrow.”
