With Playoff Hopes On The Line Tagovailoa Not Likely To Play
Going into the last week of the 2024 NFL regular season there are still two playoff spots available. One in the AFC and one in the NFC and the Miami Dolphins are hoping to get that last AFC spot. However, with their playoff hopes on the line, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is not likely to play in Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. Clearly this issue could not have come at a worse time. Not having your franchise quarterback on the field in the season’s most important game is disheartening to say the least.
Due to a hip issue, head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters today that Tagovailoa is not expected to play. Therefore, Miami will have to prepare as if Tyler “Scoop” Huntley will play on Sunday. Which would be the second straight start for the backup quarterback. McDaniel confirmed during his Wednesday press conference that Tagovailoa was a limited participant in practice. He also added:
“Today, I’m approaching it as though I think Snoop (Tyler Huntley) is starting today. And obviously, the team it’s very easy for us to adjust as the week progresses but I think you have to approach it a certain way and then that’s an easy adjustment that we’re definitely open-minded to considering our timeline last week.”
However, it’s not all bad for the Dolphins as Huntley did win the game last week 20-3, over the Browns. Having gotten more reps in McDaniel’s offense probably helped him to play better last week. As Tagovailoa is now officially listed as doubtful it would appear that McDaniel believes that Huntley can get the job done this week too. Huntley has been described as a quarterback who can extend plays and doesn’t get rattled.

Tagovailoa has a history of concussions. But this hip issue is another notable mark in a lengthy health history that includes a previous significant hip injury. So Miami isn’t pushing Tagovailoa because he’s simply not strong enough to perform right now. McDaniel added further context to the injury:
“A bruise would be like pain tolerance,” McDaniel said. “That’s something that I think Tua wishes it was just a pain issue. It’s quite literally being able to have the strength to do what we ask him to do, as well as protecting himself from very serious injury if we don’t treat it appropriately. I wouldn’t say it’s a bruise, but it’s a unique muscle issue as a result of the hip.”
So, if Miami wants that playoff spot, they will have to win on Sunday and the Broncos will need to lose.
