Wilyer Abreu Hits First Grand Slam and Inside-The-Park Home Run—Not Seen in 67 Years!
Where were you in 1958? 1958 saw the initial baby boom generation reaching 12 and 13 years old. “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley was officially recorded as the biggest-selling single of the year; the Hula Hoop was a top toy and Cat On a Hot Tin Roof was at the box office. Or you may not have been born. But if you were and were a baseball fan, you witnessed Roger Maris hit two interesting homers in a single game. Flash forward six decades and a Boston Red Sox player has finally done it as well; on June 30 Wilyer Abreu hits his first career grand slam and an inside-the-park home run— something not seen in 67 Years!
This is a very rare feat and treat for MLB fans to behold. Less than 10 players have done it. In fact, going back to the late 1800’s we now only have six guys on record having accomplished this achievement. According to the always knowledgeable Sarah Langs,
“Wilyer Abreu is the 6th player to hit an inside-the-park home run AND a grand slam (separately) in a game, joining:
8/3/58 Roger Maris
7/4/39 Jim Tabor
8/4/30 Charlie Gehringer
7/4/1923 Everett Scott
6/5/1890 Jocko Fields”
Very cool. And Wilyer’s home runs against the Cincinnati Reds were a part of 13 runs that helped win the game. Also, during this interesting matchup Abreu crushed his 15th home run of the season for the Red Sox. Which means he also now surpasses Rafael Devers for the team lead in home runs this season.

Furthermore, Abreu’s work at the plate was also historic for the Boston franchise in general. Wilyer Abreu is the first Red Sox player to have an inside-the-park HR AND a grand slam in the same game since Jim Tabor on July 4, 1939. Additionally, when you look at the list of Red Sox players in the last 85 years to hit an inside-the-park home run and a grand slam in the same game; you’ll find one name. Wilyer Abreu.
Therefore, Wilyer definitely had himself a night. He definitely had himself a game. And baseball fans were blessed to be able to see it.
