Will The NFL Allow London to Host A Super Bowl

It was a novelty that left some fans feeling confused or angry with the first NFL game being played in London. However, that was 17 years ago and now London mayor Sadiq Khan has set his sights on the biggest game of all. But will the NFL allow London to host a Super Bowl? Well there are some factors to consider to answer that question.

First of all the London mayor said, “But I want more international events. The Super Bowl is really important for us,” Khan told The Athletic this week. “We have a number of American football games and I want it to come here because we want American sports fans in Europe to come to London to watch them, not just go to America.”

So he wants to pump up sports tourism in his bustling metropolis which will certainly bring in plenty of revenue. What American city wouldn’t also want to have that slice of Super Bowl pie? But for now, the next three Super Bowl locations have already been determined. They are:

  • Super Bowl LIX (February 2025): New Orleans,Louisiana
  • Super Bowl LX (February 2026): Santa Clara, California
  • Super Bowl LXI (February 2027): Inglewood, California

Commissioner Roger Goodell attended a fan forum in London last October. Commenting on the Super Bowl, he pretty much ruled out having a Super Bowl in London. Mainly because the selection process prefers having an NFL team in the chosen city. Per Goodell, “For us to play a Super Bowl in a city where we don’t have a franchise, that would be pretty hard to do,” he said.

And of course, London does not have an NFL team.

One other factor to consider are the multiple time zones involved. It’s already difficult enough dealing with time difference between the east and west coast in the United States. Fans complain that games start to early or end too late. It’s a five hour time difference between New York and London, and eight hours difference for California. Good luck coming up with the perfect kickoff time.

So for now Mayor Khan is not likely to get his wish anytime soon. However, there will continue to be regular season games played in London. And eventually they may even get a permanent team in the city. In the meantime, Munich and Brazil have entered the international chat. They might start getting ideas too. Watch out Khan!
