Will Smith and Dodgers Finalize 10-Year $140 Million Extension

To quote Tom Cruise, Los Angeles’ homegrown catcher said ‘show me the money;’ and the ball club backed up a Brinks truck to oblige. Literally, everyone on the Dodgers seems to be getting fatly paid. The front office feels they have found their core group of guys to help bring the franchise to full season championship glory. And they don’t want them going anywhere. The latest move? Will Smith and the Dodgers finalize a 10-year $140 million extension that will keep Smith in Dodger blue for the foreseeable future.

Smith was selected by the Dodgers during the first round in 2016. Making rapid progress even despite injury; Smith gets his first MLB start in 2019. Since then he’s become an All Star, helped the U.S get to the championship game in the WBC. And brought another World Series win to the LA franchise in 2020.

Therefore, he is a major key to LA’s winning formula and they want to stay in control of all variables. So then, an extension deal is the answer. ESPN’s Jeff Passan confirms the extension news. He states,

“BREAKING: Catcher Will Smith and the Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a 10-year, $140 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN.”

With a team that now includes Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernandez, Glasnow, Yamamoto and Kershaw. Adding and cementing Smith into the roster feels like Thanos putting the last stone into his glove. Los Angeles is a super team and now they must perform.

Nonetheless, the franchise feels really good about their chances. Not only do they feel that one championship is feasible; but multiple World Series titles and wins. In fact, upon signing, two way player Shohei Ohtani mentions that Los Angeles should get ready to have multiple parades. If that’s not confidence; we don’t know what is.

Moreover, the Dodgers are off to a hot start so far this season. They kicked off the Seoul Series in Korea against division rivals, the Padres; splitting the series 1-1. They showed their batting is clearly no problem. Yet, defensively and pitching wise there are a few concerns. Nevertheless, with money obviously being no issue; it’s nothing a blank check can’t fix.
