Will Seattle Seahawks Retain Geno Smith As Quarterback?
He had been written off as an adequate backup quarterback but not much more was expected of him. Then he had a resurgence to his career after he joined the Seahawks in 2020. And things just kept getting better for him from there. So now the question is will the Seattle Seahawks retain Geno Smith as their starting quarterback? Indications are that the team wants to keep Geno on board because he is their guy. General manager John Schneider shared that the team is set to meet with Smith’s representatives Friday as they try to hammer out a new deal.
Seahawks ESPN reporter Brady Henderson went on to post about the situation. “Based on Schneider’s answer to Stelton’s follow-up, it sounds like those will be preliminary discussions in which the Seahawks get a ballpark sense of what Smith will be looking for when negotiations begin in earnest.” “We hope to get an extension with Geno,” Schneider said. “Geno knows he’s our guy. We love him and we want to keep going forward.”
That’s excellent news for Smith who resurrected his NFL career with the Seahawks. Prior to arriving in Seattle he had been known for throwing interceptions in abundance while with the New York Jets. He had been drafted in 2013 to be their franchise quarterback but things didn’t work out. It had been a bumpy stay in New York for Smith. He was involved in an altercation with defensive end IK Enemkpali resulting in his jaw being fractured. He missed multiple games while Ryan Fitzpatrick stepped in as quarterback. So after four seasons with the Jets he moved on to the New York Giants for a season and then the Los Angeles Chargers for a season.

But the tide turned in 2022 when the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. Smith who had quietly been the backup stepped in as the starting quarterback. His breakout 2022 season was so good that he led the team to the playoffs. He earned a Pro Bowl nod and won the Comeback Player of the Year Award all in 2022. And he was voted to the Pro Bowl again in 2023.
In 2024 he came close to getting to the playoffs again. However, the Rams had a 10-win record like the Seahawks but held the tie-breaker. Therefore, the Seahawks were eliminated from playoff contention while the Rams won the division.
Needless to say his career in the NFL now is much improved over his start in the league. If the Seahawks do keep the 34-year old quarterback he can continue to rewrite his legacy. But we’ll see what happens going forward.
