Am I the only one who regularly forgets that the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals play in Missouri not Kansas? Well my faulty memory may soon become a non-issue because a new question has popped up. Will the Governor of the state of Kansas, Laura Kelly, steal away the Chiefs and the Royals from Missouri? It just may be possible as legislation was passed last Friday. The new law is an expansive plan to bring both sports teams to Kansas. By means of issuing billions in bonds to finance new stadiums for the teams.
According to the Kansas City Star, ‘The plan for winning over the Chiefs and Royals relies on billions in Sales Tax and Revenue, or STAR bonds. Under the new law, the bonds would be paid back by tax revenues from within any new stadiums and surrounding retail development, as well as future sports betting and Kansas Lottery revenues.’ Further, the democratic governor also signed a tax cuts package she negotiated with top Republican lawmakers. The Legislature passed the stadiums plan and the tax cuts in a one-day special session on Tuesday.
Historically, financing sports stadiums with bonds and taxes has not worked out well for the cities where the stadiums are located. Per the author Dennis Coates, “numerous other studies that have found that the effect of sports franchises and stadium and arena construction on local economies is weak or nonexistent. Indeed, franchises, stadiums, and arenas may be harmful rather than beneficial to the local community.”
There’s no word on whether either franchise will pick up and move across state lines. But I think for the Kansas City Chiefs they might consider another option. If they even want to leave Missouri that is.

By the way, Waldron has an amazing knuckleball that many MLB players are talking about. Anyway, if Mahomes is a Padres fan and the Chiefs are looking to relocate, why not go to San Diego? San Diegans are huge sports fans and are still mourning the loss of the Chargers.
Okay so maybe Mahomes isn’t necessarily a Padres fan, San Diego would still be a great landing place for the Chiefs. Of course if the Royals want to leave Missouri they can’t go to San Diego. The Padres have baseball on lock. And that’s fine because the governor of Kansas is trying to welcome them with open arms.
