This would have been a super quick answer had Tom Brady not retired earlier in 2023. Moreover, I’m still bummed about that announcement, but the man has to live his life right? After all he was 45, so I say he has earned his retirement. So that still leaves us with the question, who is the oldest NFL player? Well that depends…

For instance, Jason Peters who was last with the Dallas Cowboys franchise is currently a free agent at the time of this article being written. If he is picked up by another team he will be 41 years old when the season starts. However, at that age and not being able to play every down, it’s likely that his playing days may be over. But nothing is ever certain in the NFL so I won’t rule out a possible mid-season pickup.

And then we have the kicker Robbie Gould who concluded his 18th NFL season in 2022. According to his interview with NBC, he has no intention of retiring. However, at this moment he is a man without a team. Hopefully, he will get picked up because he still has some career milestones he wants to reach. Should that happen he will be 40 at the start of the 2023 season.

Furthermore, with the fate of Jason and Robbie still undetermined that leaves us with the former Green Bay Packer stalwart, Aaron Rodgers. It’s hard to believe that he is not a Packer anymore but that’s life in the NFL. He’ll be suiting up in the big apple as quarterback for the New York Jets at the ripe old age of 39.

Playing in the NFL is brutal. And that’s why the average career lasts about 3.3 years. Such a bleak stat makes George Blanda’s career that much more remarkable. Not only did he play two positions; quarterback and placekicker. But he also played in 26 seasons. He retired at the ancient age of 48! And yes I thought Tom Brady would at least match or exceed that number. Oh well you can’t always get what you want.

With the retirement of so many veterans, the NFL is getting younger. That’s probably a good thing since it is a young man’s game. However, we appreciate all the great players that have been in the NFL. It has been a pleasure watching such talented athletes. We salute you!
