Who Has the Most MVPs In the NFL
Another season is rapidly approaching the end. And that brings up a lot of MVP chatter. So that being the case, who does have the most MVP’s in the NFL? If you care about football at all, then the answer should pop into your head pretty quickly.
He isn’t playing anymore but he was extremely popular when he did. And no doubt his popularity is what led to his being awarded so many MVP’s. He was also known for appearing in lots of commercials. Papa John’s, Nationwide, MasterCard, and the list goes on. In addition, he made a hilarious guest host appearance on Saturday Night Live. Have you got a clue yet?
Well I won’t keep you in suspense. The man with the most MVP’s is Peyton Manning. During his 18 year career he won the most coveted NFL award FIVE times. Crazy right?! Coming in at second is Aaron Rodgers. He didn’t have the same level of popularity as Peyton, but he definitely had the Golden Boy aura about him.
Both quarterbacks put up big numbers and had ridiculous passing accuracy. You might think that Tom Brady would hold the title because of all the Super Bowls he won. But instead he is in a three-way tie with Jim Brown, Brett Favre, and Johnny Unitas with three MVP’s. Heck even Brady’s childhood idol, Joe Montana only won the award twice. So it’s definitely not about Super Bowl titles. But rather the stats and overall popularity of the candidates.
Who Has the Most MVP’s In the NFL
The NFL MVP award is associated with the Associated Press (AP). However, other entities also select their own MVP winners such as the Pro Football Writers of America. Previously the Sporting News and United Press International awarded MVP’s. The MVP category is dominated by the quarterback position.
Between the 1970’s and 2000’s the award was occasionally earned by a running back. Some of them were Walter Payton, Earl Campbell, Marcus Allen, Emmitt Smith, Shaun Alexander, and LaDainian Tomlinson. Barry Sanders shared the award with Brett Favre in 1997. Adrian Peterson was the last running back to claim the honor in 2012.
Defensive players can forget about winning the prestigious award. The last defensive winner was in 1986 by the fearsome “LT” Lawrence Taylor. Quarterbacks of his era hated playing against him! Peyton was lucky he didn’t have to play against him.
