Who has the most interceptions in NFL history

Who Has the Most Interceptions in NFL History?

We all know that the NFL loves high flying offenses that score a lot of points. It’s exciting to see teams score a bunch of touchdowns. Hopefully both teams are scoring in a game and not just one otherwise that can get boring fast! On the other hand, rough and tough defensive games are equally fun to watch. And of course a great defense includes great defensive backs. So on that note, who has the most interceptions in NFL history?

Defensive backs are worth their weight in gold. The really good ones come through in the clutch. They are the guys that get that much needed interception at the most crucial point of the game. And if the defensive back is having a really good day he’ll take it to the house and put that all-important touchdown on the scoreboard.

As fans of the NFL we have seen several great defensive backs who have made fantastic interceptions. Guys like Ronnie Lott , Rodney Harrison, Aeneas Williams, Darrelle Revis, and Champ Bailey. The list is a long one but we loved watching them all play. And yet not one of them can claim to have the most interceptions in NFL history.

Who Has the Most Interceptions in NFL History?

According to the NFL Record and Fact Book, the honor of having the most interceptions in NFL history goes to Paul Krause, followed by Emlen Tunnell, and Rod Woodson. Looking at the chart below you can see that the top three interceptors put up some pretty good stats. Rod Woodson came close to scoring a defensive touchdown almost every year of his illustrious career.

Player                            Years       No.           Yards       Avg.      Long          TD
1. Paul Krause …………..16          81              1,185        14.6        81              3
2. Emlen Tunnell……….14          79              1,282       16.2        55             4
3. Rod Woodson ……….17           71              1,483       20.9       98             12

Playing defensive back is a tough job, especially in the NFL today with all of the rules in place to protect the offensive players. It’s almost a miracle if a player can play the position without getting called for various defensive penalties. It will be interesting to see what the stats will be for current NFL defensive backs once they retire. Will they put up stats similar to former players? Only time will tell but we can’t wait to find out.
