White Sox Tie MLB Record With 120 Losses by 1962 Mets
It is a record no doubt the Mets are happy to distance themselves from and pass on to another unfortunate team. Yesterday, Chicago battled it out against the San Diego Padres, but lost the war being swept in the series. However, these last three loses secured the one record this organization and especially, its fans did not want. On Sunday, the Chicago White Sox tie the MLB record with 120 losses set by 1962 Mets.
Yikes. 100 losses are tough. But seeing that additional 20 games in the loss column just seems to hit even more.
Nevertheless, just how bad were the Mets in 62’? As The NY Times puts it,
“The 1962 Mets went 40-120 in their debut season. That team was cobbled together in an expansion draft. That team had every excuse in the book to be bad.”
Yes, the Mets’ 120 losses are the most by any MLB team in one season since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders (20–134, .130). No team would match this mark until now some 62 years later.
However, what is even worse, there’s still a few games left in the season. Meaning, there is still time for the Sox to not just tie with the Mets, but break the record. Currently, their W-L record for the 2024 season is 36-120. With a 156 games in the books for Chicago and just 6 games left. We will just have to wait and see how things shake out for the ball club.
Who is next up on the White Sox schedule? There’s just two teams left. The Los Angeles Angels as well as the Detroit Tigers.
And with the Tigers having something to play for, they are going to dye everything in their power to demolish the Sox. Detroit finds themselves in an all out fight in the playoff picture. Being very much in the thick of the wild card race in the American League. The Tigers are currently tied with the Kansas City Royals with 82 wins and both teams have a one game lead on the Minnesota Twins. The standings are TIGHT. But this is the type of baseball we all love, meaningful games all the way to the very end.

Nevertheless, in case you are wondering how the Padres versus White Sox game went down on Sunday. At first, things looked good for the Sox. They led 2-0 until Jurickson Profar hit a home run; making it 2-1. But then, from there things would only go downhill.
The Padres all season have been known for their late game comebacks. And Sunday would prove to be no different. The Chicago White Sox would end up tying the post-1900 MLB record of 120 losses by the 1962 expansion New York Mets on Sunday when the San Diego Padres won 4-2 by rallying for three runs in the eighth inning, capped by Fernando Tatis Jr.’s towering home run.
