What State Has the Most NFL Teams?

We know that the NFL is the most popular sport in the United States. Therefore, it seems a little odd that some states do not have a team while other states have multiple teams. So then what state has the most NFL teams? Well first of all, out of the 50 states only 23 have NFL teams. However, some states have what I would call a shared team.

There is the New England Patriots that play their games in Foxborough, Massachusetts. But as their name implies they represent all the states in the New England area. States like Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. I’ve heard from various fans in Connecticut that some cheer for the New York teams while others cheer for the Patriots. Since I’m not from New England I won’t stick my nose into their business. They can root for whomever they choose.

We also have the Carolina Panthers who represent both North and South Carolina. Apparently Charlotte, NC was chosen as the site for their stadium because it’s centrally located between the two states. How thoughtful! One other team that represents more than one state is the Washington Commanders. Well actually they represent the District of Columbia, a.k.a Washington D.C. and the state of Maryland. The other team representing Maryland is the Baltimore Ravens. The stadiums for both teams are located in Maryland.

So having said all of the that we come to the point of this article. There are actually three states that are in three way tie for each having three teams. Those states are California, Florida, and New York. California has the 49ers, the Chargers, and the Rams. Florida has the Jaguars, the Dolphins, and the Buccaneers. Last but not least is New York, with the Jets, the Giants, and the Bills.

Fun fact: the southern and plains states previously didn’t have NFL representation simply because their markets were too small to make expansion of the NFL there feasible. Also in the southern states the people tend to be huge college football and basketball fans. Even the mighty NFL can’t compete against the NCAA. However, starting in the 90’s the population grew in these smaller markets. As a result, new expansion teams like, the Panthers, Titans, and Jaguars came into existence.

I assume that at some point the popularity of the NFL will wane. As the saying goes, “all good things must come to an end.” But before that time comes, I wonder will the NFL expand again and add more teams. And if they do expand what will be the next state to be granted a team? It will be interesting to see what happens next.
