What Is the Highest Scoring NFL Game?
Sometimes scoring points in the NFL is tough to do. At other times teams can make it look easy. So what is the highest scoring NFL game? Well believe it or not there have been quite a few high scoring games. Of those games, there have been multiple times where 59 points were scored.
For instance the Kansas City Chiefs outscored the Denver Broncos 59 -7 on September 7, 1963 in Denver. Talk about an embarrassing home team loss. Old school fan favorite, Len Dawson, threw for four touchdowns in that contest. The Chiefs scored in every quarter, whereas the Broncos got their lone score in the second quarter.
In another 59 point fest the New England Patriots shellacked the Tennessee Titans 59-0 on October 19, 2009. That day was a cold, blustery, snowy day and the Titans wanted no part of it. At that point in the season the Titans had not yet won a game. Needless to say, this game killed whatever morale they had left. Tom Brady threw for 380 yards and six touchdowns.
Another game with a team scoring 59 points was the Baltimore Ravens vs Miami Dolphins beatdown on September 8, 2019. The final score was 59-10 with Lamar Jackson throwing for five touchdowns and 324 yards. The Dolphins had their fans booing them nine minutes into the game. Only the second game of the season, clearly this wasn’t the start the Dolphins had hoped for.

But if we are talking about the total score of a game the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets combined to put up 90 points in a game. The Buccaneers lost 28-62 on November 17, 1985 to the Jets in New York. Ken O’Brien, quarterback of the Jets, threw 5 touchdowns. While Steve DeBerg of the Buccaneers threw two touchdowns.
And then there is the Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams. On October 22, 1950 at Los Angeles the two teams combined to score a whopping 97 points. The final score was 27-70 in favor of the Rams. On a side note, the Rams apparently like being in 90+ points scoring games. On September 29, 2019 they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Los Angeles 55-40. Although 95 points were scored they weren’t blown out. It seems the Buccaneers defense managed to play just a little better than the Rams defense.
However, the granddaddy of them all is the points fest put up by the Washington Redskins and New York Giants. The final score on November 27, 1966 was 72-41, a massive 113 points!
Some people like high scoring offensive games. Others prefer low scoring, tough defensive games. However, as long as it’s competitive I don’t care what the score is. Unless, of course, my team is on the losing end!
