What Did We Learn From Week 1 of the NFL?
The Jets defeated the Bills wrapping up week 1. So what did we learn from week 1 of the NFL? Absolutely nothing. Come on people it’s week 1 for crying out loud! In other words there’s a lot of football left to play. And we all know that things can and do change in a heartbeat. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about some of the things that happened.
People have been saying that this year could be the year the Cowboys finally return to the Super Bowl. I’m not willing to go that far yet. But they shut out the Giants 40-0 so you at least have to sit up and take notice. The Cowboys defense terrorized Giants QB Daniel Jones. Whether they will continue to dominate like that remains to be seen. The Giants haven’t had much success against the Cowboys or Eagles lately. They will need to step up their game.
The Browns were another dominant defense. Holding the Bengals to 3 points was impressive. However, Bengals QB Joe Burrow didn’t practice in August and is coming back from an injury suffered in training camp. But on the whole, the Bengals offense was lackluster to say the least. Last year Joe Burrow started the season coming off of an appendix issue. So maybe they are just off to a slow start and will get better. In the meantime, kudos to the Browns on getting a home opening victory. That hasn’t happened since 2004.
In other news, the Patriots immediately dug themselves into a 16-0 hole in the first half. QB Mac Jones eventually started making some plays and they were in range of winning the game. Unfortunately, bad Mac showed up again and was not able to lead the team downfield for the victory. Instead he lost yards and had a delay of game penalty. You can’t make mistakes like that with the game on the line. The good news for Patriots fans is that the O-line played better than expected. The defense played well too. Hopefully Bill O’Brien, offensive coordinator, can cure what’s ailing Mac.
What Did We Learn From Week 1 of the NFL
I was happy to see the Raiders hang on for the win against the Broncos. I’m rooting for Jimmy Garoppolo because I don’t think the 49ers should have let him go. With their New England Patriots connection, maybe Josh McDaniels finally has a quarterback that he won’t ruin. And at the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, congrats to the 49ers for beating up on the Steelers 30-7. The Steelers didn’t look like they wanted to play.
Last but not least, Aaron Rodgers was injured four plays into the Monday Night Football game. He has a torn achilles. The good news is, tears usually don’t require surgeries. The bad news is it could take a year for recovery depending on how bad the tear is. We’ll have to wait for more information in that regard.
There were good plays, bad plays, and crazy plays. All of which is what makes the NFL entertaining. So we’re on to week 2 starting with the Thursday night match up between the Vikings @ Eagles. See you there!
