West Virginia Mountaineers Snubbed NCAA Being Investigated
It was quite the shock to see the West Virginia University men’s basketball team left out of the basketball tournament. They had an incredible season which led to their being included in every expert bracket projection. So seeing the West Virginia Mountaineers snubbed from the selection process the NCAA is now being investigated. The state of West Virginia said they are launching an investigation against the NCAA after the West Virginia Mountaineers were left out of the men’s basketball tournament.
According to WTRF.com, “West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey is asking the NCAA to provide explanations for their selection process for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.” However, West Virginia governor Patrick Morrisey took matters a step further, announcing that the state is threatening to take legal action against the NCAA.
“Last night, like many West Virginians, we watched the March Madness selection committee … to see how WVU was going to be seeded in the tournament,” Morrissey, standing behind a podium with a sign that read “National Corrupt Athletic Association,” said Monday at a press conference. “Nearly every single sports fan, pundit, bracketologist, everyone had WVU as a shoo-in for the tournament. In fact, leading up to Selection Sunday, 111 of 111 bracketologists projected WVU to make the tournament.
“I’ve asked [West Virginia] attorney general [JB] McCuskey to launch an investigation into the NCAA Tournament selection committee to determine if any backroom deals, corruption, bribes or any nefarious activity occurred during the selection process. I know that the attorney general and I are going to leave no stone unturned during this process. We need to get to the bottom of it.”
Wow, the governor is not trying to sugarcoat anything, he is clearly upset with how the selection process played out.

However, the attorney general pumped the brakes on litigation. He said:
“What we are asking for is a level of detail and a level of transparency, [a] level of accountability, so teams like West Virginia can plan in the future,” McCuskey said. “We need to know what they are looking for.
“We are hoping to work with the NCAA to find out what is the objective metric. If it isn’t an objective metric, and it’s purely subjective, how are we supposed to build a schedule, roster and a team to get into the NCAA Tournament prospectively? We’re super hopeful that the NCAA is going to work with us.”
The VP/Director of Athletics, Wren Baker, weighed in with his thoughts on the matter with a social media post on x.com:
“Heartbroken for @WVUhoops . I can’t comprehend this team being left out. Our resume was better than several teams in the field and it’s a terrible travesty that we weren’t included. I have so much appreciation for @Coach_DeVries, our coaching staff and players. They deserved better than what the committee delivered today. Let’s rally around these young men and let them know how proud we are of them!”

Coach Darrien DeVries also expressed his disappointment in a statement the matter:
“Obviously, we are extremely shocked, saddened and disappointed with not being selected for the NCAA Tournament,” DeVries said. “We strongly believe that we have a resume that is worthy of an NCAA Tournament team. I am incredibly proud of this team and what they accomplished. They poured their hearts into this season and put all their collective efforts into making the NCAA Tournament, and I believe they did that.”
With the stunning exclusion of the Mountaineers it makes sense to find out what happened. And perhaps spare other teams in the future from being needlessly excluded. Particularly smaller schools that don’t have the money or the prestige as some of the larger universities. But for now there are a lot of broken hearts in West Virginia.
