Washington Commanders Will Retire Darrell Green’s Number

His NFL resume is second to none, having set the bar for what it takes to be a great cornerback. Because of his numerous contributions to the team, the Washington Commanders will retire Darrell Green’s number 28 jersey. He’ll be joining an elite group of Washington players to receive the honor. They are Sonny Jurgensen (No. 9), Bobby Mitchell (No. 49), Sammy Baugh (No. 33) and Sean Taylor (No. 21).

After a stellar 20 seasons with the team, it’s time for the Hall of Famer to receive his flowers. The retirement ceremony will take place at some point during the 2024 season. I think the best part about the announcement is that Green was tricked into making it himself.  He thought he would be reading a script for a team-produced video promoting the NFL Draft. Watch the video showing how it was pulled off. Honestly Green accomplished so much while he was playing that it’s difficult to list everything. But below are some of his career highlights:

  • Seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro
  • 1996 Walter Payton Man of the Year
  • Most consecutive seasons with an interception (19)
  • Four-time winner of the NFL’s Fastest Man Competition
  • Appeared in 295 games with 258 starts
  • Two-time Super Bowl winner
  • Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008

Green was overwhelmed to hear that his number would be retired. “I’m humbly grateful,” Green said. I feel like crying just thinking about it right now. This means a lot to me. I would’ve never dreamed this. “I was so shocked. It’s almost like it breathed life into me. I have never been so surprised, shocked. My head is still spinning, but I am a million percent humbled.”

Managing Partner Josh Harris had this to say about the retirement, “Darrell Green’s legacy transcends the boundaries of the football field. Throughout his remarkable career, Green embodied the values of excellence, perseverance, and sportsmanship on and off the field. His speed, skill, and dedication to the game and our community for a record 20 years earned him the nickname “The Ageless Wonder.” And made him a beloved figure in Washington, D.C., and beyond. Retiring Darrell Green’s jersey symbolizes our commitment to preserving the rich history and tradition of our franchise.”

This couldn’t happen to a better player and person. Congratulations Darrell Green, it was a long time coming but you finally made it to where you belong!
