Washington Commanders Will Be Looking For New Offensive and Defensive Coordinators

They had a great season last year going 12-5 in the regular season and playing in the NFC Championship game. But this year they fell off a cliff going 5-12. In part due to the decline on the defensive side of the ball. They also suffered injuries on the offensive side of the ball. But it’s a tale of two sides as the Washington Commanders will be looking for new offensive and defensive coordinators. One is leaving by choice, the other by force.

First off, the offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has decided to seek opportunity elsewhere. And he has the financial means to do so having another year left on his contract with the Commanders. Plus he’s still getting paid from when he was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals but was fired after the 2022 season. Kingsbury can also add to his resume that he was highly recruited by minority owner of the Commanders, Magic Johnson. Therefore, the Commanders and Kliff Kingsbury mutually agreed to part ways.

However, the story is different for defensive coordinator. The Commanders defense finished the season ranked last in yards and 27th in points which is a steep decline from where they were last season, 13th and 18th respectively. As a result the decision was made to fire Joe Whitt Jr. Prior to joining Washington’s staff Whitt had not called any plays. But Quinn took over defensive play-calling duties from Whitt after Week 10.

When Quinn was hired as the head coach in 2024 he brought Whitt on staff with him. Prior to that the two had worked together four years in both Atlanta and Dallas. Whitt served as the pass game coordinator in both places under Quinn.

Losing both coordinators adds to the fact that the general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn want to improve the team. They hope to do this by getting younger, faster and more explosive talent. Especially since they had the oldest roster in the NFL in 2025. They are set to have 23 players hit free agency, 17 of which are 30 or older. However, they also are expected to have some of the most available cap space in the league along with the 7th overall pick. They are in a good position to accomplish their goals.

In the meantime, Kingsbury is likely to explore some of the available head coaching positions. Whereas the road ahead may be a bit more bumpy for Whitt. Nevertheless, it will be a new beginning for both men and the Washington Commanders.
