Washington Commanders Went Shopping For Coaching Staff

Washington Commanders Went Shopping For Coaching Staff

They remained tight-lipped about what was going on with coaching. However, it is now clear that the Washington Commanders went shopping for their coaching staff. Raiding the coaching staff of other teams to fill their coffers. It started with the hiring of head coach Dan Quinn. He came from the Dallas Cowboys, their former defensive coordinator. Kliff Kingsbury was brought on staff as the offensive coordinator. It had appeared that he was all set to become the Raiders’ OC but that failed to happen.

The details as to why it didn’t work out are unknown. However, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport said that minority owner, Magic Johnson, was instrumental in recruiting Kingsbury. Convincing him that Washington was the place to be for him. Nevertheless, clearly Kingsbury was a hot commodity that the Commanders managed to scoop up.

And then there was the hiring of defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. He is also a former Cowboys’ staffer having been their secondary coach. Developing cornerbacks is one of his fortes as he is credited with the development of ball hawks Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. Bland had five interceptions returned for touchdowns in 2023, a single-season record. Whitt Jr. also spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons before joining the Cowboys.

So the top two coaching positions were filled but the rest of the staff remained a mystery. According to hogshaven.com the team retained three coach’s from Ron Rivera’s staff:

QB coach Tavita Pritchard

WRs coach Bobby Engram

Assistant LBs coach Ryan Kerrigan

Anthony Lynn was snagged from the San Francisco 49ers and will be the Run Game Coordinator. And Larry Izzo was snatched up from the Seattle Seahawks to be the Special Teams Coordinator.

For the full list of coaching changes you can go here. It’s obvious that Dan Quinn is excited about his new hires and is looking to turn things around for the Commanders. They were lackluster on both offense and defense in the 2023 season. As he said in his introductory press conference, he “cannot wait to get this thing rocking.” And when describing what he wants the team to look like he said, “Explosive and physical, and I’d hope teams that have to play against us are like, ‘Damn, this is gonna be hard today.'”

With all the moves that have been made by Washington it will be exciting to see how things go in the 2024 season.
