Washington Commanders Traded Brian Robinson To Running Back Needy 49ers

As is often the case, teams get struck with injuries and that has been the case with San Francisco. After dealing with injury issues last season, this season Christian McCaffrey is one of the few healthy running backs in the room. Therefore, the Washington Commanders traded Brian Robinson Jr. to the running back needy 49ers. However, Robinson has also  had durability issues, as he has missed at least two games in each of his three NFL seasons.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

“Trade: Commanders are trading RB Brian Robinson to the 49ers in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick, sources tell ESPN.”

“The 49ers RB room has been banged up: Isaac Guerendo, Jordan James, Corey Kiner, and others have all missed time. Christian McCaffrey, who only played 4 games last year, has actually been the healthiest RB in camp. Now Brian Robinson Jr. joins the group in a trade between John Lynch and Adam Peters, who worked together in San Francisco from 2017–2023.”
Part of the reason the Commanders let go of Robinson is because of the 2024 seventh round NFL draft pick out of Arizona. That would be running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who likes to go by “Bill.” The nickname came from his likeness to the cartoon character Little Bill. After spending a year in obscurity he has suddenly burst onto the scene. Thanks to the second week preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football August 18. Croskey-Merritt had 46 yards on 11 carries with his second carry resulting in a 27-yard touchdown.
It’s his dynamic rushing ability that stands out and makes fans excited. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn was inspired to say:
“I like the skills that we’re seeing from Bill,” Quinn said. “And I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen so far. I know he was amped and ready to go for tonight, but he makes plays; he’s got quickness. I love the ball security that he had tonight. Those are important things that you can’t overlook.”

Meanwhile, Robinson flew to San Francisco to take his physical. If and when he passes the physical, the trade will become official and the 49ers will have a new backup running back. The team also made another roster move on the offensive side of the ball. The #49ers have acquired WR Skyy Moore and a seventh-round pick in 2027 from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2027.
So Robinson will not be alone in joining his new team. Hopefully both players will have a healthy and productive 2025 season in San Francisco.
