Washington Commanders Slay the Lions and Move on to NFC Championship

This game was FIRE. A highly anticipated game between a rookie quarterback and the NFL’s number one offense. But the Washington Commanders slay the Lions and move on to the NFC Championship for the first time in 33 years (1991)!

Seriously, the Commanders came to play. Their defense was dominant during the Lions first possession. Causing Detroit to go a very rare three and out.

At first, it seemed like Washington was going to draw first blood on their first possession. Thanks to some hard running and elusive plays. However, a blown fourth down decoy play call sent the ball back to Detroit. And then the Lions capitalized.

Detroit looked more like the offense we have seen all season long. Effective. With a mix of passes and runs, they effortlessly make their way down the field. A Jahmyr Gibbs 1 yard TD run and extra point put the Lions up 7-0.

However, Jayden and his squad said hold our helmets. They willed themselves to get on the board and succeeded. Wasn’t a TD but a Zane Gonzalez 47 yard field goal makes it a four point game, 3-7.

Detroit gets the ball back but makes their first real mistake of the game. The Washington defense gets to quarterback Jared Goff and causes a turnover. The Commanders take advantage. It was looking a bit scary when Washington got down around the 15 yard line; but they convert on 4th down to give themselves a few more chances to score. And finally punch it in to take the lead, 10-7. At this point of the game the Commanders have 173 yards of offense already, a real solid start.

But the Lions just keep on firing right back! This game is a shootout. Goff is able to connect with his man in the back of the end zone. The Sam LaPorta 2 yard TD pass from Jared Goff plus extra point makes the scoreboard 10-14. Lions are back on top.

Yet, the SHOOTOUT CONTINUES people! Commanders take command of the lead again eating up some major yardage. Daniels throws a pass to one of his three receivers positioned to his left. This Terry McLaurin 58 yard TD pass from Jayden Daniels takes the wind out of the Lions crowd. Score is now 17-14.

But then the Commanders suck the air out the stadium just moments later again. Jared Goff got greedy and tried to go for the big play and is intercepted. The turnover leads to a Quan Martin 40 yard interception return for a TD! Zane Gonzalez kicks the extra point and Washington is up 24-14.

However, the Lions restore their fans faith just minutes later. Honestly, this matchup is looking more and more like a Madden video game experience. Detroit’s Jameson Williams just runs it down the Commanders’ throats. Some 61 yards for the touchdown. It’s 24-21… what a GAME!

If you had any voice left, you probably lost it again with Washington’s next possession. Daniel’s throws an absolute dime. Jayden tosses to Brown for a 39-yard gain to the Lions 6-yard line. Couple plays later, a Zach Ertz 5 yard TD pass from Jayden Daniels has the Commanders’s up 31-21 going into halftime.

The third quarter begins and the energy is still high. Commanders start with the ball, but the Lions’ defense proves to be too much. In no time flat, Detroit gets their first possession of the second half. And the Lions make good on it with a long successful drive. Detroit answers back and cuts the lead with a Jahmyr Gibbs 8 yard TD run. Washington is barely ahead 31-28.

But the Commanders put together an eight play drive and take it to the house. They get into the red zone and Detroit gives them another gift. Twelve men are on the field causing a penalty that puts Washington around the two yard line. Brian Robinson runs it in one yard for the touchdown, 38-28 Commanders.

However, disaster strikes again for the Lions. Detroit commits their fourth turnover of the game. Jared Goff throws another interception.

Washington’s Austin Eckler then does some hardcore running. Gains 30 yards. In the red zone the Commanders are down to 4th down and coach Dan Quinn continues to be a gambling MADMAN. Playing with House money pays off, a Jeremy McNichols 1 yard TD run gives Washington a commanding 45-28 lead. Can the Lions come back?

No. Both teams tack on a FG a piece. Then Goff ends the Lions’ chances with another interception. Jayden Daniels and the Commanders are the victors 45-31. The Lions had five turnovers and Washington had none. Can’t win a game with turnovers. Next, the rookie sensation and his Commanders squad will face either the Los Angeles Rams or Philadelphia Eagles. Can’t wait!
