Warriors Steph Curry National TV Season Debut Saves NBA 2024 Season Decline

Numbers had been incredibly bad. But one man came along with a cape to save the basketball viewership day. In a matchup against the Boston Celtics, the Golden State Warriors Steph Curry’s national TV season debut helps to saves the NBA 2024 season sharp decline.

Just how low were the TV numbers so far this season? Well, the decline was seen even earlier in the year during the playoffs. The 2024 National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs averaged 4.53 million viewers across ABC, ESPN and TNT – a 12 per cent decline on the previous year’s post-season.

Flashing forward to the beginning of the 2024-2025 NBA season and things started off with a bang; then took a dive. According to Clutch Points:

“Viewership to begin the 2024-25 NBA season has not been what the league expected. Although opening night was a success, with the New York Knicks taking on the Boston Celtics as well as the Minnesota Timberwolves facing the Los Angeles Lakers, the same cannot be said for the rest of the games. The first doubleheader of the season on ESPN last Wednesday declined roughly 42 percent compared to last year, according to Sports Media Watch. Thursday followed a similar trend, as TNT’s viewership declined by over 30 percent.”

30…40 percent decline is not what anyone in the league wants to see. It solidifies that there is definitely a growing problem. And if it is not addressed the NBA could be in real trouble in the coming years.

However, Steph Curry is giving the league a viewership savior boost. And no one is surprised because he’s like a cheat code; exciting to watch whenever he steps on the court. As Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch says,

“One of the simplest cures for the NBA’s early season ratings slump is having Stephen Curry in the lineup. Wednesday’s Warriors-Celtics NBA regular season game averaged a 1.2 rating and 2.14 million viewers on ESPN, marking the most-watched NBA game in the two weeks since Opening Night and an increase of 30% from Spurs-Knicks in the same window last year (1.65M).

[Therefore] Curry’s national TV season debut gives NBA viewership a needed boost Wednesday night. Curry and LeBron James have played in a combined three games on ESPN/TNT this season, [which is] half the amount of the same point last season.”

Curry and Lebron are two of the biggest NBA stars currently playing. But both are nearing retirement. So then, the NBA will need to act fast and immediately in order to create additional viewership magnets.
