Vikings Completed the Week of Upsets Monday Night

Kirk Cousins led his team to victory on Monday Night Football. The Vikings completed the week of upsets with their Monday night win. Cousins threw for 378 yards and completed 35 of 45 of his passes. He had one interception but it really didn’t impact the game. It happened on their first possession of the game. But the 49ers ended up giving it back when Christian McCaffrey had a rare fumble. However, that set the tone for the rest of the game. Nothing seemed to go well for the 49ers on offense or defense. Even kicker Jake Moody had a missed 40 yard field goal.

On the other hand the Vikings offense and defense were clicking. Cousins was able to find his receivers wide open in the middle of the field time after time. The 49ers defense kept playing cover-2 instead of blitzing more often and they paid for it. That helps to explain why Cousins threw for almost 400 yards. Whereas, Brock Purdy made some ill-advised throws and the Vikings defense took full advantage. They also shut down the running game, holding McCaffrey to 45 rushing yards.

Usually the 46ers defense is dominant with players like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner. They weren’t able to get any sacks last night. Nor did they put much pressure on the quarterback. In his after game press conference Bosa said, “You kind of get lulled to sleep by some of the protections,” Bosa told reporters in Minneapolis. “When those [opportunities] come, you have to be ready for them. I’m not sure how it went for the other three guys; I can only focus on myself. There were definitely a couple opportunities there where I could’ve changed the game. “I needed to do that with the kind of player I’m supposed to be.”

At times Brock Purdy looked nervous or slightly panicked. Most of the time he is pretty even keeled. However, he didn’t have the luxury of Deebo Samuel being on the field. He was out with a shoulder injury. Certainly that could have contributed to some of the mistakes Purdy made. Or it may have something to do with what Peyton Manning said on his Monday night show with Eli. He mentioned that they both experienced their first NFL losses almost immediately in their careers.

Yet last week was the first time Purdy had lost in his NFL career. Previously he had won 10 regular season games dating back to last season. So perhaps he has to learn how to lose. Either way I’m guessing Mr. Irrelevant will be fine.
