Venus Williams given wild card entry to Indian Wells event.

Venus Williams Given Wild-Card Entry To Indian Wells Event

She is a tennis legend who has been a part of the game for over three decades now. However, at 44 years old, some may be wondering why she hasn’t yet retired from the sport. And now the question rises again since Venus Williams has been given a coveted wild-card entry to the annual Indian Wells event. The event was formerly called the Indian Wells Open but now it’s known as the BNP Paribas Open.

Here’s a little more background about the event provided by the WTA:

“Founded in 1974 as the Indian Wells Open, the BNP Paribas Open is an outdoor WTA 1000 event played on hard courts where both singles players and doubles teams compete for a championship. Often referred to as the “Grand Slam of the West,” the BNP Paribas Open is historically the most-attended tennis tournament in the world aside from one of the four majors. The action is held within the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, which boasts 29 tennis courts. The main stadium, the second largest tennis stadium in the world, can host up to 16,100 fans. Winners of the BNP Paribas Open can then attempt to achieve a Sunshine Double by also taking home the Miami Open, a tournament that historically takes place directly after the event at Indian Wells.”

So it is to this prestigious event that Venus Williams has been invited. Williams is 44 years old and has not played a WTA Tour-level match in nearly a year. She played two last year and lost them both. So why would the WTA invite her to such a high-level competition? Apparently her legendary resume may have something to do with it.

The tournament had this to say about the wild-card for Williams:

“Williams, a Southern California native, has competed on the WTA Tour for more than 30 years since her debut in 1994. Williams is a former World No. 1 in both singles and doubles and has won a combined 23 Grand Slams across all competitions, including seven in singles, while also winning four Olympic Gold Medals and the 2008 WTA Tour Championships. The 2025 BNP Paribas Open will mark Williams’ tenth career appearance at Indian Wells, having reached the semifinal three times (1998, 2001, 2018) and competing most recently last year as a wild card.”

There’s no doubt that Williams has had an outstanding tennis career. But is she still able to compete at this level? The results of her most recent competitions would suggest that she is experiencing some form of decline as well as a loss in reaction time.

However, if she want’s to play in the BNP Paribas Open I have no objections. She has been absolutely electrifying on the court in the past and would love to see her back in that position. If the invitation was extended to her she has every right to accept it. And I will be cheering her on.
