The return of Venus Williams! The 45-year-old received a wildcard for the DC Open and played her first competitive tennis match in 16 months on Monday. And it went well. Venus Williams and Hailey Baptiste beat Genie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue at the DC Open! The victorious pairing effortlessly dominated, defeating Ngounour and Bouchard, 6-3 6-1 in Washington.
Nevertheless, what got Williams to pick up a racket? Well, apparently she was bitten by the tennis bug after leisurely taking in some summer matches. She says that a trip to Wimbledon in July reignited her desire to get on the court again. So then, feeling “reenergized” Venus Williams and Hailey Baptiste took to the court for their doubles opener in DC.
How long can tennis enthusiasts expect to see Venus battling opponents? During a DC press conference the former World No.1 and seven-time Grand Slam winner (in singles) just stated, I’m just here for now, and who knows? Maybe there’s more… I haven’t played in a year. There is no doubt I can play tennis… I’m still the same player. I’m a big hitter. This is my brand.

So basically everyone; enjoy the sights of Venus while it lasts. And many decided to do just that for her doubles match. Several excited spectators were anxious to see Venus in action on the court. Williams drew large crowds and lines for her big return. Sports reporter George Garbo reports,
“The line to get into John Harris court is backed up nearly to the entrance here at Mubadala Citi DC Open for the on-court return of Venus Williams, who is next-up playing doubles with D.C.’s Hailey Baptiste. Evans and Bergs may still have a third set to go, but seats are going fast.”
Furthermore, Venus also had plenty of celebrity and fellow athletes support. For instance, attendees spied a NBA superstar among the throngs. New Houston Rocket Kevin Durant was in town in order to take in Williams’ doubles match.
