Utah Hockey Club Is Set to Begin Play in 2024-2025 Season

The name still needs some work. However, the colors are set and voting shall press on. The Smith Entertainment Group closes transaction, and now the Utah Hockey Club is all set to begin play in 2024-2025 season!

A transaction such as this one, for any sport is good news. It means business is still thriving. There is a current demand. And that fans in a different region can now enjoy having a “home team.” Getting as many fans involved is important to the success of any aspect of the sports industry.

Hockey insider and president of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, Frank Seravalli, is among the first to break the news to the masses. He reports,

“Utah Hockey Club is official for Year 1.

Smith Entertainment Group closed on the deal that officially makes Utah an NHL franchise. Team name to be revealed at a later date as part of fan vote, and Utah HC is an option.”

Nice piece of intel. Furthermore, ABC4’s Dana Greene follows up on the original report by adding,

“BREAKING: The new NHL team will be referred to as “Utah Hockey Club” just for this season. Voting will continue for the official name through 6/20. The team colors are permanent — Mountain Blue, Salt White, and Rock Black. Merch will be available at the Draft Party 6/28.”

Additionally, an official statement was also released by the NHL Public Relations staff. The brief announcement reads as follows:

“Smith Entertainment Group, led by Ryan and Ashley Smith, today formally closed its transactions – announced on April 18 – establishing the Utah Hockey Club beginning with the 2024-25 season.

The NHL Board of Governors previously approved a plan pursuant to which the Arizona Coyotes assumed inactive status, and a new franchise is established in Utah where it will begin play for the 2024-25 season. As of today, the Coyotes have transferred their hockey assets – including their full Reserve List, roster of Players, draft picks and Hockey Operations Department – to the Utah franchise.

“On behalf of the Board of Governors, I am delighted to officially welcome Utah to the National Hockey League,” Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “Congratulations to Ryan and Ashley Smith, their entire organization, the state of Utah and the fans as the Club continues its exciting march toward puck drop in October.”

As mentioned, the name will change in the near future. Since let’s face it… Utah Hockey Club is kind of on the boring side, and thank goodness is just a “filler” name. The color scheme for the team is nice, really like the tone of blue chosen. Especially, since some fans are voting for snowy names like Blizzard, Mammoth, etc. So the hues are fitting.

However, it’s good to know that the official jersey design could change as well in the future. A better design could really make the colors pop even more. Nonetheless, we are sure Utah is happy to have the team and it will be interesting to see what the real official name will be.
