USA Victorious In The Women’s 4x100m Relay
After a dominant day in track and field yesterday, the gold medals just kept coming today. The USA was victorious in the women’s 4x100m relay. Composing the team were Melissa Jefferson, Twanisha “TeeTee” Terry, Gabby Thomas, and Sha’Carri Richardson. Earlier in the week, Melissa Jefferson won a bronze medal in the women’s 100m and Gabby Thomas won gold in the women’s 200m. And of course, Sha’Carri Richardson won the silver medal in the women’s 100m sharing the podium with teammate Melissa Jefferson. Jefferson, Terry, and Richardson all earned their first gold medal with this relay victory. Gabby had already earned her first individual gold medal in the 200m event in Paris.
Despite the pouring rain, the race went forward. The women got off to a good start with Jefferson who successfully exchanged the baton with Terry. However, on the second baton passing between Terry and Thomas it was a little shaky but they completed the exchange without any mishaps. But the slight hitch cost them some time and Thomas had work to do. The Germans had taken the lead but Thomas put them back in striking range. Richardson took the baton from Thomas and turned on the jets. Prior to crossing the finish line she took a quick glance to see where everyone was at and then sprinted across the finish line.
Richardson didn’t look like she had any difficulty at all in passing both Great Britain who won silver and Germany who took the bronze. I think this was one of her best races as she was so fast and so smooth, completely unbothered. In fact all the ladies on the team were cool as cucumbers as they ran the race. This was the same group of ladies who qualified for the finals so the grouping worked out well for the USA.
USA Victorious In The Women’s 4x100m Relay
Here’s a fun fact regarding this particular relay race. Team USA has been in a different class in the Olympic women’s 4x100m relay. They have won Olympic women’s 4x100m relay gold 12 times. More than the rest of the world combined (11). Conversely, things have not gone well for the men in the same category. Today they were disqualified from the relay because the handoff between Coleman and Bednarek took place outside the zone. Unfortunately, botched handoffs have become a hallmark for the men’s relay.
Congratulations to all the women for keeping the winning tradition alive. In other news, Rai Benjamin won his first Olympic gold in the men’s 400m hurdles event final on Friday. Also, Team USA’s Olivia Reeves won weightlifting gold after lifting an Olympic record. Wow, it was a great day for gold.
