USA Men’s Basketball Team Defeats South Sudan in Second Game of 2024 Olympics
We all knew going into this one it would not be easy. But Team USA prevailed! The USA Men’s Basketball Team defeats South Sudan in the second game of the 2024 Olympics.
The first time these two teams met during an exhibition game South Sudan really made a statement. Giving the USA a rare challenge. South Sudan barely lost 100-101. So then, going into this game 2 Olympic matchup, Team USA made sure to bring their A-game.
When the first quarter comes to a conclusion. The USA finds themselves with a 12 point lead over South Sudan. Yet, there’s still plenty of game to play, so the USA needs to keep pounding. South Sudan is not a team they can afford to take lightly.
The second quarter begins and the USA keeps up their intensity. With Davis and Durant immediately making shots, Durant making plays from deep. Derrick White also gets in on all the scoring, thus tacking onto the USA’s lead. White is nothing but net and knocks down a huge three.
Besides scoring, another thing Team USA is doing well in this matchup is defense. Getting Sudan to turn the ball over. Thus, giving themselves more opportunities to score and making South Sudan play catch up. Moreover, helping to keep Sudan down is the effectiveness of Bam Adebayo, who got mad love and roars from the crowd with every dunk.
Jayson Tatum continues to look good with assists, with one going to Haliburton who knocks down shots back to back. However, with three minutes to go in the second quarter, Davis comes out the game after noticeably limping around. It looked as though his ankle had been inadvertently stepped on. Therefore, Davis comes out the game; but the beauty is Team USA is loaded so the show continues on. Going into halftime the scoreboard reads 55-36.

Going into the second half the USA continues to act out the Michael Jordan meme, taking it all personally! The squad wanted the world to know they are still the best. And that close exhibition game is not what audiences should get used to seeing.
In the 3rd they get their largest lead of the night, a 21 point lead. However, South Sudan wasn’t completely going away. At the end of the third quarter, the USA’s lead is slightly widdled down to 16 points.
In the final quarter South Sudan really gets to work, cutting the lead down to 14 points. Then 12 and then 11 after a foul. But Booker charges to the hoop giving himself an opportunity for a huge three point play, and does, drawing the foul. Then a Durant pass to Davis leads to another insane dunk whipping the crowd into a frenzy. This game has indeed been an entertaining spectacle.
Lebron James (who would end the game with 12 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST, 1 STL in 19 MINS); checks back in and Team USA begins the task of finishing putting down the hammer on South Sudan. After helping the USA extend their lead. James checks back out, Edwards comes in along with Haliburton. And it is Edwards who puts the EXCLAMATION POINT on the game. Scoring twice with just seconds to go with a dunk then a dagger from deep!
What a game. USA wins it 103-86. Six different players reached double figures in scoring for Team USA. Bam Adebayo had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Americans. Plus, Kevin Durant (14), Anthony Edwards (13), LeBron James (12) and Derrick White (10 points) as well as Devin Booker (10).
Nevertheless, now the squad is moving on to the quarterfinals. But still hats off to the South Sudan, a great young team with a bright future. We’re sure we will be hearing more from them too. But congratulations to Team USA, keep working to bring that gold back home.
