USA Basketball Women Go Undefeated in FIBA Qualifiers After Taking Down Spain

They were pre-qualified before ever stepping foot in Puerto Rico; but they officially have punched their ticket to the World Cup in Berlin. And they did it by demolishing and dominating all their opponents by double digits. What a performance! USA Basketball Women go undefeated in the FIBA Qualifiers after taking down Spain.

In case you missed all of the qualification action pertaining to the USA. The women faced off against five other countries. Playing Senegal, the host nation Puerto Rico, Italy, New Zealand and then finally Spain. The first four games were absolute blowouts. The USA dropped the mic and left the court beating Senegal by 64 points, Puerto Rico by 44, Italy by 34 points and New Zealand by 54 points.

Nevertheless, the final game and matchup went differently. Spain gave Team USA more of a run for their money and a challenge than other previous nations they’ve played during qualifiers. In every other game no other country was able to tie the score up with the USA. While the starting five did rack up over 20 points, by the end of the first quarter the USA was only up five points. Furthermore, in the first quarter Spain evened things out with 21 points a piece.

However, the American ladies quickly went on a run going up 8 points with six minutes left to go in the first. By halftime the USA had extended by a smidge more. Ending the first half up, 32-44.

The third quarter, in all honesty, was probably the sloppiest quarter by Team USA during FIBA qualifiers. The pace looked lethargic, missed shots, turnovers and a plethora of fouls. Which gave Spain the opportunity to slash the lead and get somewhat back into the game. However, in the fourth the ladies got back to true USA hoops.

With ten minutes left in regulation, Team USA was able to build a stronger double digit lead. Going up by 17 points, 58-75. And this is about the margin the game would stay at till the final buzzer. The USA women got the victory, with a 14-point win, defeating Spain 70-84.

Top scorers of this final game versus Spain were: Kahleah Cooper (20 Points), Kelsey Plum (18 Points) and Dearica Hamby (14 Points, 7 Rebounds). Overall throughout the competition, Caitlin Clark led USA in total points (58) as well as assists (6.4) per game; Paige Bueckers finished with over 40 points and Angel Reese led USA in rebounds (8) per game. We are so excited for Team USA Women in the World Cup. We can’t wait for the Olympics. Are we witnessing the development of the women’s Dream Team?
