Upsets Were the Order Of The Day In Week 7
Patriots fans were no doubt surprised but happy to get a win this week. Actually upsets were the order of the day in Week 7 action. Absolutely no one picked the Patriots to win over the Buffalo Bills. However, the Patriots got off to a fast start and took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. The Bills got things going in the 2nd half and took the lead. But Mac Jones lead his team down the field with about two minutes left on the clock. The go ahead touchdown was scored leaving Buffalo with 12 seconds to try to tie things up with a field goal. Instead the ball was fumbled and the Patriots recovered it to seal the victory.
And then we had the New York Giants take down the Washington Commanders. Just when it looked like the Commanders were putting it all together they give up a win. The defenses for both teams were on point. However, Tyrod Taylor orchestrated two touchdown drives. Whereas the Commanders offense was ineffective. Both offenses have struggled throughout the season. But the Commanders should have been able to get the win. They are going to have to figure things out because the clock is ticking.
Cleveland just keeps plugging along. They get written off and then surprise everyone with a victory. That habit continued on Sunday when they edged out the Colts 39-38. The Browns showed that they could score in many different ways. Jerome Ford kicked things off with an impressive 69 yard touchdown run. Special teams blocked a field goal. The defense scored a touchdown after forcing a fumble when they sacked Minshew. Although the Colts hung in there, the turnovers killed them. Minshew fumbled three times and threw one interception.
Upsets Were the Order Of The Day In Week 7
Brian Hoyer filled in for Jimmy Garoppolo who was injured last week. However, he couldn’t lead the Raiders to a victory. Instead they lost to the hapless Bears 12-30. The Bears were lead by undrafted rookie QB Tyson Bagent. He acquitted himself nicely completing 21/29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. On the other hand, Hoyer’s stats were 17/32 for 129 yards and 2 interceptions. After he threw a pick-6 in the 4th quarter he was replaced by Aiden O’Connell. O’Connell also threw an interception but he did lead the Raiders to their only touchdown score. Josh McDaniels was an offensive guru with the Patriots. He needs to get this Raiders offense going in the right direction. Otherwise this team is doomed.
Another huge upset was the beatdown of the Detroit Lions by the Baltimore Ravens. It wasn’t that anyone thought the Ravens couldn’t beat the red hot Lions. But I doubt that anyone anticipated the 6-38 bloodbath executed by the Ravens. In the words of head coach Dan Campbell, “They kicked our a–.” Truer words were never spoken. It’s one of those head scratchers that you just have to move on from. And I’m sure nobody is more upset than the Lions. They will bounce back from this debacle by good grief Charlie Brown!
The Denver Broncos got their second win of the season over the Green Bay Packers. A missed field goal and a terrible fourth quarter interception sealed the fate of the Packers. The Seahawks had a convincing win over the Cardinals. They scored points every quarter whereas the Cardinals didn’t score any points until the second half. But it wasn’t enough to pull out a win.
More News and Notes
Sunday night the Eagles got back on track with a hard fought win over the Dolphins. QB Jalen Hurts outplayed QB Tua Tagovailoa throwing for more yards and touchdown passes. On a side note, watching the game made me wish announcers would keep their biases to themselves and critique the players fairly. But that is not likely to happen in my lifetime.
Deshaun Watson left the Browns game early and did not return. He is expected to play next week. Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton will need wrist surgery. He is expected to be out for about two months.
The Monday Night Football game will be the 49ers @ Vikings. Christian McCaffrey is expected to play tonight. He suffered an oblique injury last week against the Browns. It has been a wild week 7. If the Vikings win it will complete a week of amazing upsets.
