Welcome to DOCtober. While he is one of the managers that fans call for his head on a platter every single season. One thing that has to be acknowledged is that Los Angeles’ manager did a pretty good job during the NLDS. Therefore we present an unpopular opinion: LA Fans should recognize Dave Roberts managed the NLDS very well.
Like him or hate him, the man did his job. And he did it against a ball club that seemed to have the Dodgers’ number this year. The San Diego Padres actually won the season series between the two teams and had been winning the NLDS matchup. But Dave Roberts took the cards that had been dealt and won with them.
Mike Lupica a columnist for MLB.com commented on the skills of Dave. He mentions,
“13 pitchers the last two games for the Dodgers. No runs for the Padres. Dodgers playing for their season in both games. Such great pitching. Such a great managing job by Dave Roberts.”
Yes, this year Roberts has been able to manage the Dodgers through countless injuries. Manage them through a tight National League playoff contention race during the last half of the season. As well as be team to come off a bye week in the postseason, go down 2-1 in the division series, and STILL comeback to win the NLDS despite having to toss a bullpen game. A master class.

Magic Johnson also must of liked what he saw during this series as well. Johnson personally named Roberts as well as others within the organization deserving of praise. In an online post to social media platform X, Johnson states,
“Congratulations to my Dodgers ownership partners, Manager Dave Roberts, and all of our Dodgers players and fans tonight!! We are officially going to the National League Championship Series against the Mets! Two HRs from Kiké Hernandez and Teoscar Hernandez led us to a 2-0 victory and the pitching from all of our pitchers, starting with Yamamoto, was tremendous. All of our relievers also did a great job tonight!”
Nice. Yes, for this series Dave Roberts deserves some flowers. But before he can be crowned (and really secure his job given the roster he’s been blessed with); he needs to bring a full season championship to the city of LA. To accomplish that this season, he will first need to navigate through the New York Mets.
And it will not be easy. The Mets bats have been fiery hot in the playoffs in the wild card and NLDS. The Dodgers pitching is banged up, but the bullpen has been excellent. So then, can Roberts manage the Dodgers to another series victory? We will begin to see this coming Sunday.
