United Football League Made Its Debut After Merger
On Saturday March 30 the new professional minor league was in business. The United Football League (UFL) made its debut after the merger of the USFL and the XFL in 2024. Now the new league consists of eight teams from each of the former entities. And the two conferences within the league are also named after the former entities (USFL and XFL). There are 10 weeks in the season followed by the Conference Championships which will be held on June 8 and June 9. And the season will conclude with the UFL Championship on June 16.
The UFL seeks to be the premier spring football platform and are not in competition with the NFL. Nevertheless, comparisons will likely be made between the two leagues anyway. Week 1 of the UFL kicked off with the 2023 champions Birmingham Stallions (USFL) vs Arlington Renegades (SFL). One area where comparisons take place is in the game attendance. Naturally, attendance at NFL games has continued to rise. On average 70,000 fans were in attendance at each game during the 2023 season.
On debut weekend, the Chocktaw stadium boasted an attendance of 14,153. Not bad for a stadium with a 25,000 seating capacity. Conversely, Ford Field home of the Detroit Lions, had 9,444 fans attend the game between the Battlehawks and Panthers. With a seating capacity of 65,000 at Ford Field that few fans is not a good look. So the question is: how can the UFL generate more interest in their league? It’s certainly not the price of tickets that is the problem. Tickets for the next Michigan Panthers game can be purchased on Ticketmaster for $15.

I think NFL fans are used to a level of competition and skills that the UFL cannot provide. Therefore, they may not view the UFL as being worth their time to watch. On the other hand, they have to compete with the other major sports like MLB and NHL. Not to mention that the NBA will be wrapping up their season around the same time as the UFL. That is a lot of stiff competition for the UFL to overcome.
But for diehard football fans who can’t fill their days while the NFL is offseason maybe the UFL can fill the void. They would have to suspend their NFL expectations and just enjoy the games for what they are. It’s a minor league and so are the players. But the games can still be entertaining and fun to watch. All I’m saying is that if you’re having NFL withdrawal symptoms then maybe the UFL could be the cure. Besides what else have you got to do?
