UNC Finalizing Deal With Former NFL Coach Bill Belichick
He has won more Super Bowls than any other head coach in NFL history. But he has never coached on the college level in any capacity. However, UNC is working on finalizing a deal with former NFL coach Bill Belichick. He will be replacing Mack Brown who was terminated 15 days ago by athletics director Bubba Cunningham. Belichick’s hiring is pending approval of the UNC’s Board of Trustees. UNC’s Board of Trustees is working on putting together an emergency meeting to approve Belichick’s contract, according to sources (first reported by ABC11 WTVD). Some people may be concerned about Belichick’s age (72) but he is eight months younger than Brown.
Cunningham told Inside Carolina on Nov. 27, a day after firing the 73-year-old Brown, that creativity and adaptability would be key elements for whomever the Tar Heels chose as their next football coach. And apparently Belichick impressed the right people with his plans for UNC. What started as the search committee’s initial interview with Belichick on the Zoom videoconferencing turned into into his candidacy. The Zoom interview led to a meeting with Belichick for an extended period last week on Thursday in New York City. UNC discussed contract structure and financial details with Belichick, according to sources, along with the potential length of his head-coaching tenure and his ideas for assembling a coaching staff.
Adam Schefter noted that there may be an emotional connection for Belichick regarding the job: “His father was an assistant coach there. There’s a sentimental tie with his father having been there. … He wants to coach. If coaching college is a vehicle to do it, and it’s back at North Carolina, then why not explore it.”
UNC Finalizing Deal With Former NFL Coach Bill Belichick
Belichick appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday to discuss the UNC position. The growing similarities between college football and the NFL, and how he’d build a college program.
“If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL. It would be a professional program with training, nutrition, scheme and coaching techniques that would transfer to the NFL. It would be an NFL program at a college level. It would be an education that would get the players ready for their career after football, whether that’s college or the NFL.
“It would be geared toward developing time management, discipline, structure and life skills, regardless of whether it’s for the NFL or somewhere in business. I feel very confident that I have the contacts in the NFL to pave the way for those players who would have the ability to compete in the NFL. They would be ready for it. I don’t have any doubt about that. That would be the first comment that I would make relative to the structure of the program. It would be an NFL program, but not at the NFL level.”
Belichick Shares Thoughts On College Football
“As a pro coach, you go to different schools every year, look at their players, see their programs and learn from those coaches and their situations. I’ve had a chance this year to take a longer look at college football during the college season, as opposed to in the spring from the NFL Draft perspective.”
“It’s been interesting to spend more time around the college game, as well as staying up with pro football. It’s been a good year for me. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve had an opportunity to talk to (UNC) Chancellor Lee Roberts, and we’ve had a couple of good conversations. We’ll see how it goes. Let’s just leave it at that. I want to get my press conference aura back.”
Belichick sounds like he’s ready to coach, even at the college level.
