U.S. Figure Skater Ilia Malinin Achieved His Own Three-Peat

They don’t call him the Quad god for nothing. The ambitious young man planned to perform SEVEN quad jumps in his routine. Something that no one has ever accomplished in the sport. And he is only 20 years old. But he has accomplished quite a bit in his athletic career. U. S. figure skater Ilia Malinin skated this past weekend and achieved his own three-peat. So make room Kansas City Chiefs for this ice skating phenom.

The  U.S. Figure Skating Championships took place in Wichita, KS on Sunday. And it was at this event that Malinin snagged his third straight national title with a total score of 333.31. Andrew Torgashev, who finished in second-place posted a total score of 286.49. It marked the third-biggest win in the history of the U.S. Championships across all events under the current scoring system, which has been utilized for 20 years. Camden Pulkinen rounded out the top three with a 252.92.

Despite his young age, Malinin has been wowing audiences everywhere he goes. His programs are always packed with technical difficulty and his artistry has only gotten better and better. His Sunday performance was right on par with what fans have come to expect. He successfully landed six of the seven quad jumps he had planned which tied for the record. The jumps he landed were a quad flip, quad Axel (a jump no other skater has ever landed), two quad Lutzes, quad toe loop and quad Salchow.

However, he took a really hard fall on his quad loop attempt. But he picked himself up and continued with his amazing performance. Other athletes usually only try three or four quads in free skates.

After his performance and was asked about how he was able to do it by NBC Sports:

“It wasn’t the perfect program that I exactly wanted,” Malinin told NBC Sports. “But I think it really gives me a good, solid start of what is working in this program and some things I might need to take time to really develop or take away from the program.”

And when asked what statement he was making to the world he said:

“One of the things I would say is maybe that I’m still not at my full potential yet, and that there’s a lot bigger of a limit that I can go for. So I think that’s something to look forward to worlds.”

Well then, I guess his skating rivals will need to step up their game because he has no intention of slowing down. He plans on getting even better than he already is. Congratulations on your gold medal win Ilia!
