Tyler Lockett Released By Seahawks DK Metcalf Requested Trade

He was a part of the Seattle scene for a decade; beloved by teammates, coaches and fans alike. And he made a big impact in the community both in Seattle and his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. But sadly, all good things must come to an end. That’s the case for wide receiver Tyler Lockett who was released by the Seattle Seahawks today and at the same time DK Metcalf requested a trade. So it’s been a rough day for Seattle as evidenced by Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s terse social media post: “Ayooo wtf.”

Yeah that’s what we’re all wondering. How can Seattle afford to lose both Lockett and Metcalf and leave Jaxon on his own? He obviously loved working alongside the two veteran wide receivers and likely learned a great deal from them. Despite Jaxon’s worries, the Seahawks have granted Metcalf permission to seek a trade.

But let me pause to give Lockett the flowers he deserves. He began his NFL career in Seattle as a third-round pick in the 2015 draft. Lockett emerged as one of the league’s best returners as a rookie, earning first-team All-Pro and Pro-Bowl honors as a returner and later developed into an elite receiver as well. He had four straight seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards from 2019-22. Lockett also holds the franchise single-season record for receptions with 100, a mark tied by Jaxon Smith-Njigba last season.

Apparently Lockett suspected the release was coming. After the end of the 2024 season he thanked the athletic trainers and equipment staff. Along with almost every part of the organization that helped him with his career. Thus this salary cap-related move, brings to an end one of the best careers by a receiver in team history. His absence will be deeply felt by the team and fans alike.

Back to Metcalf and his trade request. According to the Seattle Times there have been discussions about a new deal. Reporter Bob Condotta explained: “Metcalf is entering the final season of a three-year, $72 million contract he signed in July 2022, and the two sides have discussed a new deal. Seattle has routinely signed core players to extensions before they play the final season of their contracts.”

ESPN Insider Adam Schefter also added an interesting nugget regarding the trade request. “Seahawks WR DK Metcalf has requested a trade, per source. The request came today after a series of conversations over the past two weeks. Metcalf prefers a contender.”

Seattle was in playoff contention last season tying the Rams with a 10-7 record. But the Rams won the division due to having the tie-breaker. Perhaps he doesn’t think Seattle has what it takes to be a contender. Also, will Lockett seek to play for another team or will he retire? No doubt these stories will continue to develop.
