Two Young Sisters Making History In Hockey
There has been a surge in the popularity in women’s sports in general. And we’re hearing more and more stories about the accomplishments of sportswomen. This article seeks to add to the list by introducing you to two young sisters making history in hockey. Their names are Chayla and Laila Edwards. Their father started them in the sport at a young age. Chayla started playing hockey when she was about seven and her sister Laila, started when she was around 4 or 5 years old. However, they originally started with figure skating. That helped to ease their transition into hockey by developing their skating skills.
So how exactly are the two sisters making hockey history? Well for starters, in 2023 they became the first Black sisters to play for the University of Wisconsin. They helped the Badgers win the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championship. It was the 7th title for the program which makes it the most titles in NCAA history. Laila went on to add to her historical legacy. She became the first Black woman to play for the U.S. Senior National team.
Of course they had to face some challenges playing a sport where practically no one else looked like them. However, they realized that it was necessary to overcome the difficulties and obstacles which they faced. Doing so would be an inspiration to other girls in general, and people of color in particular. The two sisters are proud to be barrier breakers and role models to other girls and young women.

Currently Chayla is a grad student and plays defense. Whereas Laila is a sophomore and plays left wing on the team. They have received plenty of support and encouragement from their parents, Robert and Charone Edwards. Both parents were happy to help their daughters broaden the game and open it up to all people.
Now that they have broken the barrier they want nothing more than to make a path for others. The sisters had hoped to win a second championship together this year but it wasn’t meant to be. In a rematch on March 24 with Ohio State University they fell to the Buckeyes 1-0. Head coach Mark Johnson said, “There’s a lot for them to be proud of. We still have a young team. I thought they did well this afternoon, they gave us an opportunity to win the game.”
So although they didn’t win the title they have forever changed women’s college hockey.
