Two-Way NFL Player Travis Hunter Will Be Placed On Injured Reserve
Many people were critical of him playing on both offense and defense at the NFL level. Believing that it would be too taxing on his body constantly delivering and receiving tackles to and from other highly trained and athletic football players. Perhaps those critics were correct as today it was reported that two-way player Travis Hunter will be placed on injured reserve. Head coach Liam Coen delivered the news today as he spoke to the media.
Hunter was taken with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He sustained a knee injury in practice on Thursday. Coen described it as a “huge blow” having to put him on IR because NFL rules require that such a designated player miss at least four games. Coen further said:
“We’re currently assessing the injury, just to determine the best course of action moving forward for Travis and for the team,” Coen said, adding that it was a “non-contact” injury. “We’re still waiting on further information to determine how long it could be.”
“You just feel bad for the guy, for the kid, for our team, for everything,” Coen said.
“It’s definitely not ideal timing, not that any injury is ever ideal timing,” Coen said, “but his makeup, his general attitude towards life, how he handles specific situations … I have a lot of belief in Travis as a person, as a competitor, to come back better than ever. …”
The last full-time two-way player in the NFL was Chuck Bednarik, who retired in 1962. Hunter has been playing extensively as both a wide receiver/defensive back. His last game was against the Los Angeles Rams at Wembley Stadium in London. He caught a season-high eight passes for 101 yards and his first NFL touchdown.

Losing a player that fills two roster spot can be difficult. Without Hunter the Jags will have to depend on their other receivers Brian Thomas Jr., Dyami Brown and Parker Washington. Those three have combined for 60 receptions, 766 yards and three touchdowns this season. Whereas Hunter leads the Jags with 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown.
It’s going to take a group effort to make up for the loss of Hunter’s production. However Coen said, “Thomas this week practiced the best I’ve seen him practice.” Which we would expect from a guy who was selected for the Pro Bowl last season. In addition, the Jaguars likely will elevate two players from a practice squad group of receivers that includes third-year veteran Austin Trammell, fourth-year veteran Tim Jones and rookie Chandler Brayboy.
We wish Travis a healthy and rapid recovery from his injury. And hopefully Coen is right when he called the situation “a minor setback for a major comeback.”
