Two Veteran Quarterbacks Have Found New Homes

One of them was a former No. 2 overall draft pick. And the other has pinballed around the league. However, the two veteran quarterbacks have found new homes. I’m talking about Carson Wentz and Josh Dobbs. While Wentz started his career with the Philadelphia Eagles and had some stability that wasn’t the case for Dobbs. Nevertheless both quarterbacks are moving to new teams. Wentz has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Whereas Dobbs has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Hence, they will both be backing up the quarterbacks of Super Bowl LVIII. And each has signed a one-year deal with their respective teams.

Wentz was drafted by the Eagles in 2016 and spent five seasons with the team. He had a great season in 2017 and was named to the Pro Bowl and the Second Team All-Pro. However, he missed the postseason due to a torn ACL injury in Week 14. After leaving the Eagles, Wentz spent time with the Colts and Commanders and was with the Rams in 2023. Now the eight year veteran will back up Patrick Mahomes.

Dobbs’ career started with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars but never played a game for them. Then he went back to the Steelers and then to the Browns who waived him. After that was the Detroit Lions practice squad followed by a short stay with the Titans. Following was another stint with the Browns before he was traded to the Cardinals. That’s where he finally got to start several games and it opened the door for him to be traded to the Vikings.

He played in place of Kirk Cousins who was injured and out for the season. But he was eventually benched in favor of Nick Mullens in Week 15.

Both quarterbacks have years of experience that they can share with their new teammates. For Dobbs being a backup to Brock Purdy could offer some stability to his career. As he told The Adam Schefter Podcast, “So when free agency came, the opportunities that were presented — the biggest thing that I wanted, as I said, was to get to a place that has a consistent front office, consistent coaching staff, and does a really good job of QB development, and have an opportunity to go through a full offseason in one scheme.”

Overall, the signings should be a good fit for all parties involved.
