Two Rookie Quarterbacks Are Set To Battle In Chicago

Caleb Williams was the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was closely followed by Drake Maye at No. 3. It appears Chicago with Williams and New England with Maye have each found their long-term quarterbacks. And so this Sunday the two rookie quarterbacks are set to battle it out in Chicago. Maye had sat for the first five weeks of the season, unlike Williams who started for the Bears Week 1. Williams got off to a nice start winning his debut game against the Tennessee Titans but things have been up and down since then. Jacoby Brissett also led the Patriots to victory in Week 1. But head coach Jerod Mayo made the change to Maye in Week 6. Maye scored his first victory in Week 8 against the Jets.

Both rookies have great talent and potential but they could use some help on both sides of the ball. The Bears’ defense has been lacking when it comes to the running game. Bears’ linebacker T.J. Edwards said, “We have to do a better job as a unit to stop the run so that we can get quarterbacks to third down and make them beat us.” But the good news for the Bears is that the Patriots are dead-last in rushing success rate (26%). They have just one rush by running backs over ten yards and are producing a league-worst -46 rushing yards before contact in that span. They’re the only team in the NFL that is in the red in terms of yards before contact.

Williams has an excellent receiving corps including D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen. They will present a challenge for the New England defense. Whereas the Patriots receivers have been inconsistent and dropped too many balls. However, Kendrick Bourne looks to be getting up to speed after returning to the team in Week 5.

Both rookies have had issues with turnovers. Currently Williams has thrown nine touchdowns to five interceptions. Maye led a comeback drive against the Titans but he had three turnovers and the Patriots lost the game. Losing the game wasn’t Mayes’ fault alone but he will need to eliminate the turnovers. Both teams need to eliminate negative plays like sacks and penalties to keep their offenses out of tough situations.

The Bears are the more talented team and Williams has improved it. But Maye has definitely added a spark to the Patriots team proving himself to be leader. If both teams bring their A games then this could be a great game. But if their efforts are sloppy and lackluster it could be a snoozefest. I’m hoping for the former.
