Two New Expansion Teams Coming to Major League Baseball

Two New Expansion Teams Coming to Major League Baseball; According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan

It’s all about growing the game. More fans, more cities and of course, more competition. America’s favorite pastime is about to yet again enter a new era. Two new expansion teams are coming to Major League Baseball, finally putting an end to the expansion drought… well, sort of, maybe.

There’s a strong hunch though, from a super respected sports journalist. And he makes sense, because the MLB is really shaking things up. We already have a team on the move in the near future. The Oakland A’s big relocation to newly crowned sports empire, Las Vegas; is a reality whether fans like it or not. Yet, now there’s another emerging storyline rumbling through the baseball news pipeline, in reference to a couple of possible expansion franchises. What cities could be in the running?

Well, Utah has been VERY vocal. And they have been welcoming and offering the Oakland A’s a “home” until their new stadium can be finished on the Vegas Strip. Salt Lake City is pulling out all the stops to demonstrate they are ready for a team; and the MLB might just pull a Genie and grant their wish.

Two New Expansion Teams Coming to Major League Baseball; According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan

Nevertheless, what light can ESPN’s Jeff Passan also shed on baseball’s franchise future? Bleacher Report states,

“Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, a two-team expansion is seen as “an inevitability” with Nashville considered the “most favorable” location.

Salt Lake City is also viewed as a potential expansion city for the league. Both Nashville and Salt Lake City rank in the top 30 media markets in the United States.

The two primary reasons Passan cites as MLB’s inevitable expansion is the money that the current clubs would receive in expansion fees and the rise of “viable” cities across the United States that appeal to owners and the league.

Adding two teams would bring in more than $4 billion combined in expansion fees that would get divided between the 30 active franchises.

Passan noted any expansion would be unlikely to happen until the early 2030s because of the time it takes to create a franchise and it’s not a top priority for MLB right now.”

It’s 2024… and 2030 is just 6 years away. So then, that’s not TOO faraway in the future. But, distant enough to keep our minds on what’s currently right in front of us.

However, we can’t ignore how much money is at stake here… billions, with a “B.” There’s not a single ball club owner or executive that would be against making more coins. As we all know, money always seems to move the needle when it comes to decision-making. Therefore, as Passan states… expansion is “inevitable.”
