Two long-time Dallas Cowboys Have Said Goodbye

Two Long-time Dallas Cowboys Have Said Goodbye

Not a lot has been going on in Dallas during this free agency period. However, recently two long-time Dallas Cowboys have said goodbye to the city. First was Leighton Vander Esch saying an emotional goodbye in his heartfelt statement. He spent his entire six year career with the Cowboys. They drafted him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He was recently released by the Cowboys due to a failed physical designation. Three days after that he announced his retirement.

Vander Esch suffered a neck injury in Week 5 of the 2023 season. He was pushed from behind into the leg of teammate Micah Parsons jamming his neck and missed the rest of the season. Unfortunately, that was the fourth neck injury he had suffered in his football career. In 2019, he underwent fusion surgery after being diagnosed with a narrow spinal column. But the injury last season was so serious it was considered career-threatening. Hence his decision to retire from the game. However, the team had nothing but good things to say about him. Including that he was a leader and impacted those around him in the best ways.

As for Vander Esch he had much to say and explained the reason for his retirement:

“I realize that I am no longer able to adhere to the unwavering standard of excellence that professional football demands. I say this with a heavy heart: I am medically retiring from the NFL, I love the game of football so much. And my body won’t cooperate any longer. I cherished every moment of my NFL career, and it has been such a blessing to play the game for as long as I have played. This year, things may look a little different for me, but the sole focus is being a great husband and father for my loving family.”

The other player to say goodbye is Tyron Smith. The 33 year-old veteran signed a one-year deal worth up to $20 million with the New York Jets during free agency. He spent his entire 13 year career with the Cowboys so this will be quite a transition for the eight time Pro Bowler. He’ll be protecting Aaron Rodgers instead of Dak Prescott. Smith should be able to help alleviate some of the Jets offensive line woes from last season. Whereas Dallas will have to adjust to losing a key piece of their offensive line.

Hopefully both players will be happy with the changes in their lives. Enjoy your retirement Leighton and best wishes Tyron with your new team, the New York Jets.
