Two Celtics Crushed The History Books Last Night
A fast and furious basketball game broke out at TD Garden yesterday. With lead changes in the first half it was anyone’s game. However, Payton Pritchard and Derrick White put on a show as the two Celtics crushed the history books last night and became legends.
The Portland Trailblazers had no intention of making things easy on Boston as they were matching them score for score. But in the second half the Celtics really came alive and put some distance between them on the scoreboard. At one point the Celtics had a 25 point lead but the Trailblazers kept on battling and cut the lead down.
Nevertheless, in the face of the work Pritchard and White were putting in, there was simply no way Portland could hope to win the game. So what did the two Celtics do to make both NBA and Celtics franchise history? Well they were the first duo in NBA HISTORY with 9+ 3PT each. Together they put up 19 3-pointers (Pritchard 10, White 9). And they were the first duo in CELTICS HISTORY with 40+ PTS each. Pritchard finished the game with 43 points while White put up 41 points. White also had 3 steals while Pritchard grabbed 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
Here’s a little recap of the historic night that Pritchard had:
- FIRST Celtic with 40+ PTS & 10+ 3PM in a game
- THIRD player ever with 40+ PTS & 10+ 3PM off the bench
- THIRD player ever with 40+ PTS, 10+ REB, & 10+ 3PM, joining James Harden & Damian Lillard
Whew! That man was cooking last night and the fans were eating it all up! However, Pritchard didn’t concern himself with trying to force any shots just to get the record. As he told reporters, he was more concerned with getting the W.
Payton Pritchard refused to force shots to break Boston’s single-game 3-point record: “That’s disrespectful to the game, disrespectful to my teammates. If I got in the flow and took a shot that was a good shot for us, and I broke it that way, then that’s the right way to do it.”

Nevertheless, the crowd appreciated his efforts showing Pritchard some love with “MVP” Chants. But Pritchard kept a level head about the matter saying, “I know I have a lot of love out here, which I definitely appreciate. So, to have a night like this and see the crowd get behind me, makes me keep going and keep working hard… keep striving for greatness.”
But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention another Celtic who also made history with 3-pointers. None other than Jayson Tatum who along with Pritchard and White are the third trio in NBA history to record 200+ 3PM each in the same season. Thus, joining: 2016-17 HOU: James Harden, Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson as well as 2022-23 GSW: Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole.
