Tush Push Tabled By NFL – Other Rule Proposals Updates
It’s time for the Annual League Meeting in Palm Beach, FL of NFL owners. Where they voted on various rules proposals or revisions. One of the biggest decisions that needed to be decided upon was the Brotherly Shove. But everyone will have to wait because the Tush Push decision has been tabled by the NFL however, there are other rule proposals updates. But before we get to the other updates jut know that the Tush Push debate is a hot topic of discussion. Some are in favor of banning it while others are equally opposed to eliminating it.
Head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Sean McDermott, is in favor of banning the play. He cited concerns about player safety and over the weekend had this to say to reporters:
“Similar to how I felt at the combine… I dove deeper into more of the data on it and, you know, just thought more about it as well, and my position hasn’t really changed at all. I feel where I’m most concerned is even though there’s not significant data out there to this point, my biggest concern is the health and safety of the players, first and foremost.”
On the other hand, head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, John Harbaugh, was concerned about consistency across the board. He shared his thoughts on the play:
“We’re going to vote against that, we just feel like it’s a football play. If you want to take out pushing, then you got to take it out across the board. You know, you got to take it out down field when the guy’s running and a bunch of guys come in a push him. If you feel like it’s a dangerous play then it’s a dangerous play in every scenario. Not just at the line of scrimmage I would think, but we’re going to vote against that one.”
Tush Push Tabled By NFL – Other Rule Proposals Updates
So the debate rages on and will continue until the next meeting scheduled for mid-May. In addition to the Tush Push non-decision, below are updates on the other proposals:
- The league passed a proposal by the Eagles to align the postseason and regular season overtime rules. By granting both teams an opportunity to possess the ball regardless of the outcome of the first possession. However, unlike in the postseason, regular season OT will remain 10 minutes instead of 15.
- The NFL passed a proposal by the Competition Committee to expand instant replay’s ability to advise the on-field officials on specific, objective aspects of a play and/or to address game administration issues when clear and obvious video evidence is present.
- The league rejected a proposal by the Lions to eliminate an automatic first down as a penalty imposed for defensive holding and illegal contact.
- The Lions’ proposal to adjust playoff seeding has been tabled to a later date.
- The Steelers’ proposal regarding contact with free agents during the negotiating window passed with some modification on a one-year trial basis
- The NFL approved bylaw proposals to permit clubs to designate two players for return at the roster reduction to 53 players; to permit clubs participating in the postseason to receive two additional DFRs increasing the maximum from eight to 10; and to insert point differential as the third tiebreaker for awarding contracts.
- The league approved resolution proposals to permit clubs to prepare kicking footballs (“K-Balls”) before gameday, similar to the process permitted for game footballs
Additional Information Regarding Dynamic Kickoff Implementation
The NFL owners voted to continue using the Dynamic Kickoff. The ball spot on touchbacks will be moved from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line for kicks sent into the end zone. There was real excitement around the results of the kickoffs. “The play was a tremendous success,” Broncos special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi, who helped craft the dynamic kickoff, said Tuesday. “The injury rates were much, much lower. Obviously the space and the speed of the play were down from what we’re all used to. And so the play was a tremendous success.”
So the Dynamic Kickoff is here to stay along with some of the other proposals. But we’ll have to wait for further development on the Tush Push and playoff seeding proposals.
