Tua Tagovailoa Finally Getting His Mega Contract
It was the reigning question all off-season about when he would get his deal. Today, however, multiple sources are reporting that Tua Tagovailoa is finally getting his mega contract. Per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, “Sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo they’ve agreed to terms on 4-year, $212.4M contract extension to lock him in long-term. At long-last, Miami’s franchise QB is paid like it. The Dolphins starting QB gets $167.1M guaranteed in the largest 4-year deal in history. A massive payday and a long time coming.” The $53.1 million-per-year new-money extension is the largest four-year agreement in NFL history just nudging out Jared Goff at $53 million.
Tagavailoa has had his share of critics, many of whom feel he isn’t a franchise quarterback. And some of those reasons were listed by Will Brinson of CBS Sports. He writes, “Tua’s been injured, he’s a system quarterback, he lacks the arm strength of an elite quarterback. The Dolphins’ ceiling is capped with him under center, he hasn’t beaten any good teams with Miami. He’s a byproduct of the weapons around him, the Dolphins crippled their salary cap, etc., etc.”
However, under head coach Mike McDonald, Tagovailoa has thrived. As noted by Kevin Patra, in the past two years, the 26-year-old has ranked second in the NFL in pass yards per attempt (8.5) and passer rating (102.9), fourth in total passing yards (8,172) and fifth in passing TDs (54). That is amazing production considering, the Dolphins have started 25 different quarterbacks since Dan Marino retired in 2000. More importantly, Miami believes Tagovailoa is its franchise cornerstone and has rewarded him as such.

But there was some concern as he dealt with concussion issues in 2022 which led to talk of his retirement. However, after discussions with his family and his love of the game he decided to continue playing. Therefore, Tua had to prove the critics wrong in 2023 to earn the contract extension from a health and production perspective.
When training camp started Tua didn’t really practice which was noticed by reporters on the scene. However, today he was full-bore, no holds barred, signaling that there was likely progress with getting a deal done. And that’s exactly what happened. Now he’ll have to go out there and continue to play at a high level. Otherwise he’ll hear all the nay-sayers touting this as a terrible deal. For the fans’ sake and his I hope Tua plays up to and beyond the deal.
